I am honored and pleased to announce a two person show with artist Oscar Bernal. The exhibition will open here in Tucson at @pimaarts with a reception scheduled for November 12, 5-7 p.m.

Info:
The Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery at Pima Community College presents “Artists from the Border,” an exhibition featuring painters Oscar Fernando Bernal (1945-2016) and Alejandro Macias. Bridging generations and artistic traditions, the exhibition explores identity, culture and place through the artists’ paintings shaped by their lives along the U.S.-Mexico border. Rich colors, expressive brushwork and layered imagery invite viewers to look closely at the artists’ distinct approaches to painting.

Born in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, Bernal studied art in Mexico City under the guidance of renowned Mexican sculptor and painter Francisco Zúñiga. His work reflects the influence of master painters such as Goya, Velázquez and Rembrandt, while incorporating dark humor, subtle political commentary and personal reflections on displacement, nostalgia and identity. His experiences across northern Mexico and later in life in the San Francisco Bay Area informed his distinctive artistic perspective.

Macias, who grew up in Brownsville, Texas, draws on his experiences as a Mexican-American artist living between cultures. Combining traditional rendering, abstraction and layered imagery, his work incorporates the human form and Mexican and Chicano iconography to explore migration, assimilation, cultural identity and sociopolitical issues affecting border communities. His work has been exhibited at institutions including The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, California; and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York, where he was included in “Let Us Gather in a Flourishing Way,” a major survey of contemporary Latinx paintings, featuring 58 artists.

This is a great opportunity for artists! If you’re a high school student or a community college student who’s thinking about becoming an art major, you’re strongly encouraged to attend National Portfolio Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at the University of Arizona School of Art. University representatives from art schools around the country will meet with you to review your portfolio, offer constructive feedback and discuss their art programs.

National Portfolio Day is free and open to the public. The University of Arizona School of Art also hosted the event in 2025 and in 2024.
