Associate Professor Nicole Antebi's Art, Design and the Environment students produced a pop-up exhibition earlier this week in the SOA lobby of illustrated “Object Stories.”

In collaboration with Creative Writing Professor Ander Monson and visiting filmmaker and curator Jessica Oreck (Office of Collecting & Design), students were challenged to think about the concept of border objects or objects that translate from one language or use to another.

MFA student Melanie Montes (pictured ) presented her Object Story exploring the translation of the word “chapulín” (grasshopper from Nahuatl) into slang: someone who steals a friend's partner.

Where are they now? Wednesday: Timur Si-Qin (BFA ’08, Studio Art) is a New York-based artist and writer whose 3D-printed sculptures and other work imagine new protocols of spirituality in the face of climate change and biodiversity collapse.

He's currently presenting his work at two different locations in London: at the @albionjeune gallery, where the exhibition, “Pristine Part I,” reflects his ongoing engagement with the Peruvian Amazon; and at Regent's Park, where his “Last of the Wild and Free (Rhododendron calophytum)” — pictured — is a “monument” to a shrub that grows in the high-altitude forests of Sichuan, China. The work, created for Frieze Sculptures in 2025, is part of “In the Shadows,” curated by @fatosustek.

Born in Berlin, Si-Qin grew up in Tucson in a German, Mongolian/Chinese and San Carlos Apache Native American family. He moved back to Germany after high school but returned to the Southwest a few years later to study photography and studio and digital art at the University of Arizona.

“First I was ‘undeclared,’ which gave me the opportunity to take a wide range of courses outside of art,” Timur said in a 2017 interview with Living Content. “Looking back I’m grateful for this period for helping me expand my horizons.”

Timur’s interests in contemporary philosophy, the evolution of culture and the dynamics of cognition, take form in “branded ecosystems“ and installations of 3D-printed sculptures, light-boxes and VR. His long-term project is the proposal of a secular religion of the future called “New Peace“ — which re-establishes the sacredness of nature in a contemporary globalized and technologically saturated world, his bio says.

His work has been extensively shown in solo exhibitions in Europe, the U.S. and Asia. He also has participated in international group exhibitions such as 2026 Art Basel Unlimited, where he showcased a stainless steel sculpture of a tree that he recreated from the Peruvian Amazon using photogrammetry “to remind people these extremely beautiful habitats are in danger and need to be protected.”

𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙨𝙚 is OPEN!

Exhibition on view: 10/13/26-1/28/27
Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4:30pm
Reception: 10/22/26 4-6pm

𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙨𝙚 features artworks for which the making—or destroying—of family archives is material and metaphor. Funny, heart-wrenching, or bizarre, using the ephemera of memory itself or a copy of a copy, each artwork reminds us that everything’s relative.

Juried from an open call, the exhibition brings together UA students, alumni, and faculty alongside local, national and internationally-exhibiting artists to present hyper-intimate yet universal ruminations on the impact family plays on artmaking.

Featuring: David Weed, Destini Ross, Elizabeth Burden, Epiphany Knedler, Ghazal Hesami, Jesse Hinson, Jonathan Ade, Kaitlyn Jo Smith, Karen M Zimmermann + Tomiko Jones, Katherine Wang, Kimberly Anderson, Kira Keck, Lex Turnbull, Madeleine G Welsch, Marcus Xavier Chormicle, Melissa Zexter, Molly Etchberger, Shirley A Wagner, Ulli Hain.
Design: Tara Shoe
