“I’ve been James Paxton the baseball player since I was ten years old.” Even an MLB pitcher who threw a no-hitter and started in the World Baseball Classic isn’t immune to the Identity Trap. James Paxton reveals he still deals with this sometimes. A good outing meant good person. 😃 A bad outing meant bad person. 🙁 His nickname was “Pitcher Pax” at 10 years old. That’s a long time for your whole sense of self to be wrapped up in one thing. His advice, hard-earned: it’s okay to go all in on a sport and love it. Just make sure there’s something else in your life that gives you self-worth too because riding the identity roller coaster of “how did I perform today” is a rough way to exist. 🎧 Full episode with James on Better Sports Parents available now. “They need to get that love no matter how they do in their sport.” Former MLB pitcher James Paxton had plenty of success, from throwing a no-hitter to pitching for some of baseball’s most storied franchises. And he had unconditional support from his parents along the way. Now a parent himself, he’s learned more about a habit that seems harmless but isn’t: celebrating a win with ice cream, but not the loss. He explains why that pattern teaches kids something dangerous. That love is conditional based on performance. I’m a good person if I win. I get attention if I do well. His fix, borrowed from someone who said it best: praise the effort, not the results. Win or lose, “you gave it your all” deserves the same celebration. Detaching from the result isn’t lowering the bar. It’s protecting your kid’s sense of who they are. 🎧 Full episode with James on Better Sports Parents available now. Links in bio

Spent the afternoon out with the guys of @ubcbaseball getting them in the “swing” of things as they prepare for the 2027 season. Took a peek at gloves to get customized and took some cuts with the newest that @rawlingscanada_official has to offer. After a strong outing last year, the TBirds are looking for another strong run. ⚡️🐦

Alex Lee (UBC) delivered a complete-game gem for the NorthPaws, tossing 9 innings of 3-hit ball with 6 strikeouts in a 5-1 win over Nanaimo. The lone run allowed was unearned and he needed just 106 pitches. Lee owns a 2.81 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 25.2 innings this summer.
