Forma Vol. 0, Issue 9 (October 1, 2026) looks at architecture that gets real results through restraint:

🔹 An Ontario lake house by Michael Taylor Architecture + Design, where staggered limestone protects privacy on the road side and curved blue glass faces the water.
🔹 The Bellwoods Residence by StudioAC in Toronto's West End, organized around a full-height shaft of daylight.
🔹 The AltaGas headquarters by Zeidler Architecture at 701 Fifth Avenue Place in Calgary: 130,000+ square feet over six floors, with no tower demolished.
🔹 The Honey Bee Research Centre in Guelph, and the McMaster greenhouse by Moriyama Teshima Architects.
🔹 The École Brouch in Esch-sur-Alzette by JSWD & Jim Clemes Associates

The issue also asks harder questions. Can prefab mass timber ease Canada's housing crisis? How do ten architecture schools compare? What happens when students adopt AI faster than their schools can teach it? We also mark 78 years of RJC Engineers and list open design competitions with upcoming deadlines.

✨🤓🖥️♻️ What if we stopped treating “new” as the automatic default?

Last night, we joined UBC SALA x DIALOG for their Design Week panel series “Reuse, Don’t Build” — an incredibly informative conversation exploring adaptive reuse, circular design, and what it could look like to make reuse, rather than replacement, the default.

The discussion went well beyond the question of what we build. It opened up a much broader convo around how we approach resources, materials, existing spaces, and the systems that shape the design industry. Are there opportunities to do more with what we already have?

Drawing inspo from Paris’s PLU Bioclimatique, the panel explored how prioritizing retention can help reduce waste and carbon emissions while preserving the cultural value already embedded in our communities.

The key takeaway question was: can Vancouver do the same?

There may not be one straightforward answer, but creating space for conversations like this is important. Constructive dialogue, different perspectives, and challenging some of our industry’s default ways of thinking are how we create room to innovate and evolve.

It was a great evening of listening, learning, and reconsidering what “new” actually can mean.

Thank you to @ubcsala x DIALOG for bringing this convo together. ♻️🙏

@ubcsala has named Ouri Scott and Mari Fujita as the recipients of the 2026 Margolese Design for Living Prize.

One of the highest design accolades in Canada, the $50,000 Margolese Prize spotlights designers whose work encourages a greater understanding of the built environment. This year, two Margolese Prizes were awarded: One to a practitioner (Scott) and one to a UBC faculty member (Fujita).

“We are honoured to be able to recognize two such tremendous designers and thought leaders through this year’s Margolese Prize,” says UBC SALA Director Thaïsa Way. “Both Ouri and Mari use design to bring communities together to create a lasting difference.”

The first day of classes marks the end of summer break and the start of something exciting. We wish all the best to our future architects, landscape architects, designers, and makers on the beginning of a new academic year. We look forward to seeing the interests you pursue, the research and explorations you undertake, and the creative solutions that you develop this year.

Remember, school is a time to pursue your interests and to experiment with impunity. Amongst all the deadlines and late nights, make sure to have fun with it!

Case in point: The Perch, a unique and experimental new park pavilion designed and built this summer by UBC Master of Architecture graduate students. A welcome and inspirational addition to the community.
