On a beautiful September Sunday, we celebrated the completion of The Perch, a pavilion created by @sala.designbuild in Boundary Bay Regional Park.

Instead of a traditional Graduate Project, a cohort of 12 graduating MArch students spent their final year designing and assembling the pavilion. Led by AnnaLisa Meyboom and James Huemoeller, The Perch builds on faculty research in timber and robotics, with support from industry leaders in design and fabrication.

The structure sequences movement and pause through the deliberate framing of views to the grasslands and sky. Through its timber cladding system, which offers gradation in transparency, the pavilion traverses the line between seeing out and being seen. With cutting-edge fabrication and scripting, the form responds to the surrounding context with a considered material approach, allowing it to weather in place among the grass and beneath the sky-bound birds.

Join us for Counter Practice, our fall series of events and lectures.

In a moment when design education must confront the realities of climate crisis, colonial legacies, and social inequity, this lecture series offers a critical and generative space for reimagining what design can become. It foregrounds future and alternative configurations of space, material, practice, and knowledge that challenge dominant paradigms in architecture and landscape.

Learn more and get your tickets at the link in our bio.

The season begins on September 23 with a faculty and alumni roundtable discussion around working in community, moderated by Mari Fujita. Reserve your ticket at the link in our bio.

@ubcsala has named Ouri Scott and Mari Fujita as the recipients of the 2026 Margolese Design for Living Prize.

One of the highest design accolades in Canada, the $50,000 Margolese Prize spotlights designers whose work encourages a greater understanding of the built environment. This year, two Margolese Prizes were awarded: One to a practitioner (Scott) and one to a UBC faculty member (Fujita).

“We are honoured to be able to recognize two such tremendous designers and thought leaders through this year’s Margolese Prize,” says UBC SALA Director Thaïsa Way. “Both Ouri and Mari use design to bring communities together to create a lasting difference.”

In 24 hours, the ideas generated through the Urbanarium Studio with @ethos.lab were transformed into design sketches and creative outputs, then shared live by @jay_pitter as part of the first public presentation of the Black Public Joy Design Guidelines.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last June 2 and 3 and helped bring this living case study to life. ✨

Meet Rising Star 🌟 Robert Ferguson🌟, Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture, @UBCSALA

Already holding a Bachelor of Environmental Design from UBC, Robert chose to stay at SALA to pursue the unique opportunity of dual Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture degrees.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration in the design disciplines, he served as president of the Architecture Students Union, leading cohort that established culture-building initiatives like a faculty interview series, an Indigenous student library and bi-weekly studio breakfasts. His focus on community culminated in his graduate project that celebrates the rental “sharehouses” that he and many of his peers lived in during their studies.

He looks to remain an active member of the design community after graduation, working across practice, research and advocacy to shape just and sustainable cities.
