POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Join us for Counter Practice, our fall series of events and lectures.

In a moment when design education must confront the realities of climate crisis, colonial legacies, and social inequity, this lecture series offers a critical and generative space for reimagining what design can become. It foregrounds future and alternative configurations of space, material, practice, and knowledge that challenge dominant paradigms in architecture and landscape.

Learn more and get your tickets at the link in our bio.

The season begins on September 23 with a faculty and alumni roundtable discussion around working in community, moderated by Mari Fujita. Reserve your ticket at the link in our bio.

We are SO back!

The 2026-2027 SCARP season just got off to a great start with our annual PSA orientation trip in a new exciting location.

We spent some time in the forest getting to know one another through paddling, swimming, sauna-ing, games and conversation. It was a much needed moment to pause, and touch some grass before the school year begins.

With over 60 SCARPies in attendance we were so lucky to see so many new faces (and some familiar ones too). Here’s to a new year and warm welcome to our 2026-2028 cohort <3

Our new first year cohort 🫶🎉

We're so excited to host Veronica O. Davis this fall!

Davis is a planner, engineer, advocate and author of Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities.

In her lecture, Davis will reflect on what has changed since its publication three years ago and what hasn't.

Then she sits down with several outgoing municipal elected officials for a conversation about the brave calls, the compromises, the wins and the work we still haven't finished.

With municipal elections this October, this couldn't be more timely! We need more transit heroes in public office.

In partnership with SFU Renewable Cities.

6:30pm, Monday September 28, SFU Downtown Vancouver

See link in bio for tickets. The poster has a dark purple textured background with Movement and SFU Renewable Cities logos at the top.

Large yellow text reads “Bravery in Public Office.” Below, it features a photo of Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities.

The bottom text promotes “A lecture and live conversation with Veronica O. Davis & local leaders,” taking place Monday, September 28 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, with optional networking from 6:30 to 7:00 pm.

Hundreds of architects, multiple studios, numerous passionate students. It was an honor to introduce InfrastructHER to the national stage of Canadian architecture @raic_irac .

Yet the most valuable line we heard was this:

“It was so inspiring to see South Asian women of color representing in a room full of Caucasian and male-centered platforms.”

A Bangladeshi-Vietnamese ethnic Canadian @ubcsala student shared this with us, alongside many other conversations about refugee struggles, navigating Canadian infrastructure, and constantly searching for a sense of belonging.

This is exactly what we are trying to vocalize.

Even as Canada becomes more culturally diverse and socially reformative, infrastructure often remains mainstream. Instead of constantly creating more, we need to question whether what already exists actually works for the most excluded communities. Because if infrastructure works for the most marginalized, it works for everyone.

We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming response—for the people who came up to us after the presentation, shared their stories, or chose to stay connected.

As Bangladeshi newcomers, we see your struggles. We learn from the land and from Indigenous communities whose knowledge, resistance, and stewardship existed long before us. We acknowledge what has already been passed on and hope to carry those teachings with care into our own learning, advocacy, and co-creation.

Thank you for trusting someone who is often the only hijabi Bangladeshi BIPOC in the room, still trying, still learning, and still desperately hoping to make a difference.

~Maisha.

On April 9th we celebrated Faculty of Wellbeing Champions at UBC Vancouver! Students nominated 124 faculty members from 13 faculties who ensure student wellbeing is a priority in the classroom. At the event, students, faculty, and staff shared personal stories of what wellbeing in the classroom has meant to them and emphasized the importance of designing learning environments where students can thrive.

By centering student voices and celebrating faculty impact, this inaugural event highlights the importance of nurturing teaching and learning environments where both students and instructors can thrive. We look forward to continuing to share and celebrate stories from across the UBC community.

See all our amazing UBC faculty who were nominated at wellbeing.ubc.ca/stories!

@JamesDeanAPSC and @UBCSauderSchool Dean Darren Dahl have formalized a new strategic partnership with UNHabitat.

This joint collaboration carries a significant symbolic legacy as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Habitat I, the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, held in Vancouver in 1976.

Through this partnership, we will commemorate the past, assess collective progress and reinforce @UniversityOfBC and UN-Habitat's leadership in shaping the future of sustainable urban development.

"Having worked with the United Nations in both New York and Kenya, I have seen firsthand how critical the bridge between academic research and global policy truly is. This partnership helps us ensure that our research on human settlements, including topics like displacement, shelter insecurity, disasters and climate, is directly translated into action for the world’s most vulnerable urban populations." - Michael Hooper, Associate Professor, @UBCSCARP UN-Habitat 1976 poster featuring stylized silhouettes with a microphone and various icons, including a globe and building. Text reads "UBC and UN-Habitat partner to accelerate urban research"
