For the 11th year, ARC 301 Design Studio students and faculty gathered for the annual “flo-gatta” (Flotilla-Regatta) at Gallagher Beach, testing the buoyancy and performance of their “BO-ATs”— buoyant object architectural tectonics crafted on UB’s South Campus in our Fabrication Workshop. Clinical Associate Professor Elaine Chow, who took over the challenge last year, wanted to place an emphasis on innovation, treating the project more as an architectural endeavor rather than straightforward boat assembly construction. #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Photos: Douglas Levere

At UB’s School of Architecture and Planning, our architecture students learn to think through making — as they test design ideas and discover new possibilities. Our Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree provides a strong foundation for careers in city planning, historic preservation, community development, engineering, multimedia, exhibition design, and other allied fields.   If you aspire to become a licensed architect, this four-year program offers a clear path toward professional licensure through our accredited two-year Master of Architecture program.   Learn more and apply at the link in our profile (and don’t miss SUNY free application weeks, from Oct. 19 - Nov. 2).    #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Graphic outlining the number of years to a BS.Arch and M.Arch degree.

Paco showed up first. Inspected the work and left happy for the future to come. For four months, eight students from the University at Buffalo’s Sustainable Futures program spent their semester designing architectural and community solutions for the Monteverde region. Not hypothetical ones. Real proposals, developed with and for the communities that would actually use them. One of those designs became this — a recreational park in La Cruz, built by hand, in a neighborhood where kids from the local school now have somewhere to play that didn’t exist before. Thank you to the La Cruz community, el Fondo Comunitario, local partners and the families who trusted this process, and to every student who turned a semester into something that will still be standing long after the semester ended. //////// Español //////// Paco fue el primero en llegar. Durante cuatro meses, estudiantes de la Universidad de Búfalo diseñaron soluciones reales para comunidades reales en Monteverde. UB’s Hayes Hall recently transformed into a furniture showcase — the culmination of our summer Digital Fabrication Furniture studio, where the students acted as designer, fabricator, and client.   Sixteen students took this month-long course, where they learned to operate sophisticated digital fabrication tools, including the CNC router and the 5-axis water jet cutter – which instructor Julia Hunt, director of digital fabrication and clinical assistant professor, calls “one of the coolest machines we have.”   Julia, an alumna of the School, returned as an instructor three years ago, eager to create more opportunities for the students to learn how to use these advanced technologies.   For their final project, they were tasked with designing and fabricating an original piece of furniture. The parameters were completely open-ended, with everything on the proverbial table, from vanities to coat racks to mirrors to literal tables.     Visit our profile to learn more about the process and the high-tech tools they used. Digital Fabrication Furniture students included: Jannat Ahmed, Safa Alawdi, Sanaa Alawdi, Bianca Fini, Dean Kelley, Anna Morley, Erik Nieves, Mya Quinn, Delaney Williams, Areej Aldar, Ofir Ben-Shimon, Ryan Bingham, Tyler Brown, Hannah Ikawa, Elena LaBuz, and Mason Montgomery.   #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Photos by Frank Napolski Mya Quinn at work on her project.

The annual Model City Builders summer high school career exploration program, led by UB’s School of Architecture and Planning and The Assembly House, kicks off next week!   This collaboration, now in its second year, is a summer camp that introduces Buffalo high school students to architecture and the city, bringing together architecture, art, design, and the building trades to build skills through a project-based curriculum. Over the course of the next four weeks, students will learn about the discipline and profession of architecture, visit important buildings and landscapes in Buffalo, and experience what it’s like to be in a college architecture course.   The first two weeks of the course will be held at The Assembly House, an “architectural dreamworld” founded by UB Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Building Arts Dennis Maher, located in a historic former church in downtown Buffalo. The second half of the course will bring students to UB SAP’s fabrication workshop, in Parker Hall on South Campus.   Stay tuned to see the progress of this course, as we introduce students to primary architectural ideas — including form, space, materials, and assembly — and help them gain an understanding of how the built environment shapes our lives.   #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Student drawing with pencil

Say cheese! Trained in both planning and architecture, keynote speaker Ann Forsyth was presented with the Dean’s Medal by Emmanuel Frimpong Boamah, chair and professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, on behalf of Dean Julia Czerniak. “For Professor Forsyth, our disciplines are rooted in a clear conviction: that the built environment is not merely a backdrop to human activity, but an active force in shaping outcomes,” said Boamah. “Her career reflects a rare combination of intellectual leadership, generosity of service, and an enduring commitment to more just, healthy, and sustainable cities and places.” Master of Architecture grads! Student speaker Tendaji Ya’Ukuu, a BA in Environmental Design graduate and current student in our Master of Urban Planning program, closed his remarks with a rallying call: “My fellow graduates, our task is not small. Yet history shows that cities evolve through the conviction of those willing to plan boldy and buld responsibly. Let us approach this moment with rigor, humility, and imagination.” Master of Urban Planning grads! 🎓 Master of Science in Real Estate Development grads! 🎓🎉 In his remarks, UB President Satish K. Tripathi called upon graduates to carry forward UB’s mission of advancing knowledge and serving society. “If we have done our job well you leave with a deeper appreciation for the resilience of our shared humanity while also recognizing where it is fraying. No doubt, you will encounter trials in the coming years - uncertainty, disagreement, division. In these instances, I urge you to resist the impulse to withdraw and look past them. Instead, engage. Draw on what you have learned here to renew the fabric of our communities.” Master of Science in International Development and Global Health grads! Thanks Five students taking a selfie

On the front lawn of the historic Medina High School stands artist James Beckett’s largest North American project to date — a collaboration with the UB School of Architecture and Planning titled “A Good Wall.” It was conceived as part of the inaugural 2026 Medina Triennial, a site-responsive contemporary art exhibition that seeks to activate the landscapes and histories of Medina and the surrounding Western New York region.    Through ARC 404 “Digitizing and Designing Towards Spolia,” Assistant Professor Nicholas Bruscia and Adjunct Instructor Timothy Noble created a thoughtful, well-crafted installation for the Medina Triennial, while delivering a hands-on learning experience for students. James met with them virtually almost weekly, inspiring the students to think differently, stretching their comfort zones, and making sure their voices were heard. Students worked through every stage: building a foundation, drawing details for a permit set, collaborating with engineers, and ensuring the stability of a structure. Along the way, they navigated the realities of working within an evolving design process, adapting to uncertainty and change — the type of environment they will likely experience in professional practice.   Visit our profile to read more on this story.   #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Photos: Douglas Levere, Nick Bruscia, Tim Noble A Good Wall" was commissioned for the 2026 Medina Triennial and stands in front of the historic Medina High School.
