Our new Design for Manufacturing and Construction (D-MAC) concentration has officially launched! Join us in welcoming this semester’s cohort of students: Alexander Anderson, Myah DiOrio, Rivaldo Griffiths, HaHui Lei, Issac Lim, Mason Montgomery, John Panepento, Ben Stiller, and Leif Lin.

Led by Nick Bruscia and Julia Hunt, this concentration within the Master of Science in Architecture program is intended to meet the demand for skilled designers that can bridge the gap between design, architectural fabrication, and construction to manage and deliver complex projects at different scales. Upon graduation, these students will take away skills to adapt to emerging sectors like mixed-reality design environments, digital manufacturing, and sustainable construction technologies. D-MAC is a 48-credit program, typically completed in three semesters, and opens the door to careers in innovative design practices, fabrication labs, construction technology firms, and even R&D units within material and manufacturing industries.

If you have a background in architecture, engineering, or related design fields, and are looking to expand your technical and creative skillsets, this program was designed for you. Visit our website to learn more!

Meeting Makers: Hannah Ikawa

Meet Hannah Ikawa, the Fabrication Workshop’s newest Digital Fabrication Fellow!

Hannah often finds creative ways to use digital fabrication tools to reinterpret traditional techniques. From paper folding and Rhino-modeled surfaces for CNC milling to a stained-glass-inspired mirror made with our 5-axis waterjet and CNC mill, she is always exploring new ways to translate ideas into physical form. She has even experimented with resin printing to create complex architectural models and explore intricate forms. Throughout her time her at UB, Hannah has embraced both analog and digital tools, bringing curiosity and creativity to every project.

Come down to the shop and talk through your next project with Hannah! As one of our Fabrication Fellows, she’s here to help you explore ideas, troubleshoot techniques, and bring your projects to life.

Today is a big moving day for the Fabrication Workshop! Our Advanced Fabrication Machines from Parker 56 (SMART) are making their move over to their new temporary home.

Starting in the Spring of 2027 the Fabrication Workshop will operate out of the Hayes Annexes while Parker Hall is being renovated.

We know it is a big change! But we are excited for our new set up in the annexes, we hope you will be too. Our advanced machines such as the CNC Routers, Waterjet, Kuka arm and so much more will be fully set back up!

The Parker 2 Workshop space will remain as is until the end of the Fall term and will move during the winter break. We still have CNC routing, 3D printing, lasercutting, woodworking, and metalworking capacity this semester.

We will share some sneak peeks of the new lab space soon! Stay tuned! by @ubfablab

Paco showed up first. Inspected the work and left happy for the future to come.

For four months, eight students from the University at Buffalo’s Sustainable Futures program spent their semester designing architectural and community solutions for the Monteverde region.

Not hypothetical ones. Real proposals, developed with and for the communities that would actually use them.
One of those designs became this — a recreational park in La Cruz, built by hand, in a neighborhood where kids from the local school now have somewhere to play that didn’t exist before.

Thank you to the La Cruz community, el Fondo Comunitario, local partners and the families who trusted this process, and to every student who turned a semester into something that will still be standing long after the semester ended.

Over the course of four weeks this summer, 10 Buffalo high school students learned about the discipline and profession of architecture, visited important buildings and landscapes across the city, and experienced what it’s like to be in a college architecture course as a part of the Model City Builders program, led by Lukas Fetzko, adjunct instructor in the Department of Architecture.

The first two weeks of the program were hosted at The Assembly House where students learned about drawing, spatial concepts, collaging, and the historic architecture of the West Side. The final two weeks were held at the UB School of Architecture and Planning’s Fabrication Workshop, where the students translated their collages into three-dimensional “environment” models to house the architectural fragments they began the class with. This final showcase of student work, held on August 7 at The Assembly House, highlighted how students explored the fundamentals of spatial and architectural design by reinterpreting architectural fragments.

The Model City Builders students have been working hard in the Fabrication Workshop!

This high school career exploration program led by UB's School of Architecture and Planning and Assembly House introduces students to Architecture, art, design and builds skills over the course of 4 weeks.

The students are turning their collages of architectural elements from their tours of Buffalo into physical models here in the shop. Tutorials to build material knowledge and craft skills have been led by instructor Lukas Fetzco and our very own Steph Cramer and Wade Georgi.

We cant wait to see how all their pieces come together! Their final presentations will take place on Friday this week! by @ubfablab

UB’s Hayes Hall recently transformed into a furniture showcase — the culmination of our summer Digital Fabrication Furniture studio, where the students acted as designer, fabricator, and client.

Sixteen students took this month-long course, where they learned to operate sophisticated digital fabrication tools, including the CNC router and the 5-axis water jet cutter – which instructor Julia Hunt, director of digital fabrication and clinical assistant professor, calls “one of the coolest machines we have.”

Julia, an alumna of the School, returned as an instructor three years ago, eager to create more opportunities for the students to learn how to use these advanced technologies.

For their final project, they were tasked with designing and fabricating an original piece of furniture. The parameters were completely open-ended, with everything on the proverbial table, from vanities to coat racks to mirrors to literal tables.

Visit our profile to learn more about the process and the high-tech tools they used.

Digital Fabrication Furniture students included: Jannat Ahmed, Safa Alawdi, Sanaa Alawdi, Bianca Fini, Dean Kelley, Anna Morley, Erik Nieves, Mya Quinn, Delaney Williams, Areej Aldar, Ofir Ben-Shimon, Ryan Bingham, Tyler Brown, Hannah Ikawa, Elena LaBuz, and Mason Montgomery.

The annual Model City Builders summer high school career exploration program, led by UB’s School of Architecture and Planning and The Assembly House, kicks off next week!

This collaboration, now in its second year, is a summer camp that introduces Buffalo high school students to architecture and the city, bringing together architecture, art, design, and the building trades to build skills through a project-based curriculum. Over the course of the next four weeks, students will learn about the discipline and profession of architecture, visit important buildings and landscapes in Buffalo, and experience what it’s like to be in a college architecture course.

The first two weeks of the course will be held at The Assembly House, an “architectural dreamworld” founded by UB Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Building Arts Dennis Maher, located in a historic former church in downtown Buffalo. The second half of the course will bring students to UB SAP’s fabrication workshop, in Parker Hall on South Campus.

Stay tuned to see the progress of this course, as we introduce students to primary architectural ideas — including form, space, materials, and assembly — and help them gain an understanding of how the built environment shapes our lives.

ARC 593/493 MAKING thru THINKING with instructor Wade Georgi wrapped up class with their furniture show today in the Shop.

Students explored joinery techniques and worked with our various analog tools in our Fabrication Workshop to complete a final furniture piece of their own. This hands on approach allows students to evaluate how to work with materials and tools, going from testing to production.

The students will move on to the next course in the Making Buffalo summer sequence, ARC 406/607 Digital Fabrication- Furniture with instructor Julia Hunt. The way these courses switch from analog to digital tools such as CNC router, 3D printers and Waterjet is a great way for students to compare methods and create calibrated connections in various ways.

Students:

Ofir Ben-Shimon, Ryan Bingham, Hannah Ikawa, Elena LaBuz, Mason Montgomery, Jannat Ahmed, Safa Alawdi, Sanaa Alawdi, Bianca Fini, Dean Kelley, Anna Morley, Delaney Williams by @ubfablab
