“Wolf Play” has won some of the most important and prestigious awards in theater - the Lucille, Obie, Whiting and Steinberg. It is truly an amazing piece of art and fun to watch.

It tackles a lot of big issues from “re-homing” or essentially swapping kids on the internet, the huge complications of transnational Asian adoption, queer families, and patriarchal judgment from society and bureaucracy.

AND it got under all these big issues to share the humanity of everyone struggling in all their imperfect ways to belong, create a family / find their pack, and just survive in world that offers these gifts of new ways of forming identities and connections without all the customs/guard rails of an different era (with of course other downsides).

Did I say it was fun to watch? Reading the summary I was a bit worried it would just be a downer. Yet, the fact that the play really SAW everyone and celebrated the importance of belonging, I felt seen. It spoke to all of these feelings no matter what your story or family make up, even a truly lawful, nuclear one.

Also, the script was amazing, including these breakfast scenes with two or three conversations on top of one another. The court trial being a boxing scene. Brilliant in showing how violent bureaucracy and the courts and be.

The puppetry. The acting!

Congrats to everyone at @ubtheatredance

So glad I didn’t miss this.
Including the Talk Back lead by dramaturg @troy0330
Love that my Wednesday morning free exercise family @novemberprojectbuffalo got me to see this stellar, of-the-moment and timeless play.

A big part of my curatorial work has been around connection. #morelove I also had a long journey to create my family. These are my themes.

Also ran into one of my former @buffaloakgartmuseum ‘s intern who helped on “Extreme Abstraction” @andrea.aranki

Plus, I meet @mirae.kh.rhee - a scholar & artist speaking tonight 10/5 at 6:30pm at UB in the Center for the Arts on her art practice and Wed 10/7 at 12noon on “Mapping Migration, Tracing Routes of Return: South Korean Transnational Adoption and the Politics of Belonging.”

So much world-class art happening in Buffalo.

THURSDAY, Oct. 1, 4 p.m. | Scholars@Hallwalls: Lindsay Brandon Hunter, “‘Alienat[ing] Me from Me’ through Machine Learning: Gillian Wearing and deepfakery”

Join us for Scholars@Hallwalls! Complimentary beverages and light fare are served for a brief, pre-talk mingling session.

4:00pm | Mingling / 4:15pm | Introductions and featured talk followed by Q+A

Lindsay Brandon Hunter’s talk proposes that the study of theatre, a form and practice steeped in artifice, can help us grapple with and find nuance in anxieties around generative AI’s fakeness. Using the work of conceptual artist Gillian Wearing as an illuminating site, Brandon Hunter proposes that when generative AI creates persuasive synthetic representations, or presents the illusion of human likeness or labor, it acts theatrically—and usefully. The talk argues for fakeness as itself a valuable methodology, and for the importance of distinguishing between a well-rehearsed, deeply familiar antipathy toward the fake and artificial and the demonstrated harms and substantive threats that attend artificial intelligence’s development and deployment.

Lindsay Brandon Hunter writes about the intersections of (usually digital) media and performance. She is the author of Playing Real: Media, Mimesis, and Mischief (Northwestern University Press, 2021), and of essays published or forthcoming in the volumes Futures of Theatrical Experience and The Routledge Companion to Transmedia Theatre, as well as the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, the International Journal of Performing Arts and Digital Media, and the online journal Amodern. The working title of her second, in-progress monograph is Fake People: Theatricality, AI, and Human Likeness. She’s also an actor and director and works as an intimacy choreographer for live performance.

Another school. Another opportunity. Another possible YES.

We are thrilled to announce another college joining the growing lineup at DC Unifieds! Welcome the University of Buffalo!

College auditions are about so much more than finding “the” perfect school on paper. They’re about discovering programs, meeting faculty, making connections, and finding the place where YOU belong.

That school might just be one of the newest additions to DC Unifieds.

Come audition. Come connect. Come discover what’s next.
