🟥🟧🟨 Zodiaque Dance Company Featured in Buffalo Rising:
https://www.buffalorising.com/2026/10/versatility-matters-ubs-zodiaque-dance-company-opens-season-52-this-october/ or click link in bio

Excerpt:

“In the dance studios in the basement of the Center for the Arts, more than 50 student dancers vie for a spot in the 21-member company. The cast list announcing new company members is posted before Labor Day, and rehearsals begin for the first show of the season the following week. Founded in 1974, Zodiaque Dance Company (ZDC) has been UB’s premier pre-professional dance company, presenting innovative and creative performances for more than five decades. Now in its 52nd season under the co-direction of dance faculty members Kerry Ring and Michael Deeb Weaver, the company opens its fall concert Oct. 22, with performances running through Oct. 25 in the Drama Theatre of UB’s Center for the Arts.

“For dancers, the mix of faculty and guest choreographers offers the best of both worlds: the depth of long-term mentorship and the reach of connections beyond the university. Co-Director Kerry Ring describes the benefits of working with both kinds of choreographers: ‘Working with the dance faculty gives students the advantage of long-term familiarity with each dancer, consistent technical training, an extended creative process, and deep collaboration with the design and technology faculty. Guest artists provide a fresh perspective, new movement languages, fast, intensive rehearsals that mimic the professional scene, and current connections with a wider industry.’”

The article is by Jeanne Palmer Fornarola, Teaching Professor of Dance at the University at Buffalo. Photo by Meredith Forrest Kulwicki. Dancer: Erin Cosgrove. Special thanks for Buffalo Rising for featuring our talented students.

“Wolf Play” has won some of the most important and prestigious awards in theater - the Lucille, Obie, Whiting and Steinberg. It is truly an amazing piece of art and fun to watch.

It tackles a lot of big issues from “re-homing” or essentially swapping kids on the internet, the huge complications of transnational Asian adoption, queer families, and patriarchal judgment from society and bureaucracy.

AND it got under all these big issues to share the humanity of everyone struggling in all their imperfect ways to belong, create a family / find their pack, and just survive in world that offers these gifts of new ways of forming identities and connections without all the customs/guard rails of an different era (with of course other downsides).

Did I say it was fun to watch? Reading the summary I was a bit worried it would just be a downer. Yet, the fact that the play really SAW everyone and celebrated the importance of belonging, I felt seen. It spoke to all of these feelings no matter what your story or family make up, even a truly lawful, nuclear one.

Also, the script was amazing, including these breakfast scenes with two or three conversations on top of one another. The court trial being a boxing scene. Brilliant in showing how violent bureaucracy and the courts and be.

The puppetry. The acting!

Congrats to everyone at @ubtheatredance

So glad I didn’t miss this.
Including the Talk Back lead by dramaturg @troy0330
Love that my Wednesday morning free exercise family @novemberprojectbuffalo got me to see this stellar, of-the-moment and timeless play.

A big part of my curatorial work has been around connection. #morelove I also had a long journey to create my family. These are my themes.

Also ran into one of my former @buffaloakgartmuseum ‘s intern who helped on “Extreme Abstraction” @andrea.aranki

Plus, I meet @mirae.kh.rhee - a scholar & artist speaking tonight 10/5 at 6:30pm at UB in the Center for the Arts on her art practice and Wed 10/7 at 12noon on “Mapping Migration, Tracing Routes of Return: South Korean Transnational Adoption and the Politics of Belonging.”

So much world-class art happening in Buffalo.

“’Wolf Play’ is a beautiful work by Hansol Jung. It is a memory play that tells the story of an adopted Korean boy, Jeenu, who is grappling with being shuffled from one adoptive home to a new one, contending with adults that try their best, but make mistakes. Jeenu struggles to make sense of his shifting world through a puppet and fascination with wolves. The play invites us to think about who our family is, who is in our pack, who do we choose? It is messy and funny and heartbreaking and lovely.” – Troy Coleman, UB PhD Candidate & Dramaturg

4 SHOWS this weekend only: OCT 2 – 4, 2026
UB Center for the Arts
Tickets are $10-$25, plus fees: ubcfa.org

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the work of playwright Hanson Jung, widely regarded as one of the most distinctive contemporary voices in American theatre.

As part of THD’s Friday Forum Guest Dance Artists program, Allison Orr will provide a guest master class on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Allison Orr is a choreographer celebrated for turning everyday labor into compelling dance. Based in Austin, Texas, she draws on her background in anthropology and social work to craft what she calls “ethnographic choreography”. Working with communities including campus facilities staff, city wastewater personnel, professional baseball players, Venetian gondoliers and others, Orr transforms the movement of work into large-scale civic performances.

Over the last two decades, Orr’s visionary work has been commissioned by festivals and institutions including Fusebox, Kyoto Art Center and the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2001, she founded Forklift Danceworks, where she serves as artistic director. Her landmark work, "The Trash Project," a dance created with City of Austin sanitation workers and their trucks, earned acclaim for highlighting the artistry of labor and the importance of essential work. Orr was named a United States Artists Fellow in Dance in 2018, a recognition of her bold, community-centered approach to performance.

In 2023, she released her book titled "Dance Works: Stories of Creative Collaboration". Part memoir and part guide, Orr reflects on her decades-long work creating performances with municipal employees such as firefighters, power line workers and maintenance teams, and how community-based art projects can serve as essential tools to address civic issues. Orr’s work continues to challenge conventional notions of dance and performance, while offering collaborating community members and audiences an opportunity to acknowledge the humanity, skill and artistry in the work that sustains us all.
