*JUST* published in Cell: “Modern Science Outreach: A Guide for Scientists.”

I’m super proud of this piece, which provides a guide for scientists on how to engage the public in the modern information ecosystem.

If you’re a scientist (or know one), please check it out (or share it!)

UB Jacob’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Science White Coat Ceremony formally accepts PhD candidates into labs and marks the candidate’s transition into intensive research. 🔬 We are so proud of Abby and love the Dr Sinha & Dr Lee Ann Garrett- Sinha’s research labs; warm and inspiring environments. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around Buffalo, seeing the lab, and exploring Abby’s haunts. #whitecoatphd #futuredrlowder #goschmoopie #biochemistry

It still hasn’t fully hit me that this chapter is over. There were so many moments when the journey felt overwhelming (sleepless nights, early mornings, sacrifices, self-doubt, and constantly pushing myself beyond what I thought I could handle). But looking back now, every challenge shaped me into the person I am becoming. 🤍

I’m honestly blown away by what I was able to accomplish in four years despite the hurdles. More than the accomplishments, I’m grateful for the growth, the people, the memories, and every door that opened throughout this journey. Thank you to the Jacobs School @jacobs_med_ub @universityatbuffalo @ubuffalobiomed for helping shape this chapter of my life and grow a step closer to being the physician that my patients need🤍Here’s to the next one and to becoming everything I once prayed for. ✨

Abby will be the keynote speaker at the Putnam Valley Science Research Symposium this year. She worked with Dr Peter Johanson and published three articles in peer-reviewed journals during her junior and senior years while at Putnam Valley in Science Research. She continued her research working with fruit flies at Hamilton College: “Modelling Glioblastoma Angiogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster Larvae” with Dr Datta.

Abby is currently in her PhD program in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Buffalo, studying the SOX2 gene with Dr Satrajit Sinha. SOX2 is a gene that helps cells stay young and keep dividing. Cancer can cause the SOX2 gene to stay in the ’on’ position, so cells keep on diving which is useful for tumour formation and allows them to keep multiplying and taking over the universe. She hopes to apply the concepts gained to researching glioblastomas.

So proud of this young lady. Abby is a recipient of the prestigious 'National Institute of Health T32 IMSD' grant. The goal of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) program is to develop a diverse pool of scientists earning a PhD who have the skills to successfully transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce. The program's long-term goal is to enhance the diversity of biomedical research scientists in the nation's workforce. They pay a generous stipend to support students as they work through their PhD.

She unofficially matched with Dr Satrajit Sinha, PhD, in the Department of Biochemistry at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. This means she will work in this lab over the next four years to attain her PhD, hopefully studying glioblastomas. Dr Sinha's lab focuses on understanding the transcriptional control mechanisms that govern epithelial cell development, differentiation, and cancer. (Gene Expression; Genomics and proteomics; Molecular and Cellular Biology).
