2026 UC Exercise Science 🤝 Sport Administration Study Abroad to Japan 🇯🇵 | (First ever Exercise Science Study Abroad Trip)

Tokyo • Osaka • Uji • Nara • Okinawa • Kyoto • Hiroshima

Honored to have co-lead our first-ever Exercise Science Study Abroad trip this past May - an incredible experience alongside 20 amazing students. Together, we explored exercise science, sport, wellness, and mindful movement while immersing ourselves in Japan’s rich culture, history, and traditions.

A special shoutout to @dr_jules_b and @jsimmbo for being absolute rockstar faculty. It was so fun sharing this experience and traveling alongside you both.

An unforgettable journey and a trip I’ll always be grateful for. See ya next year, Japan! 🫡

The UC Exercise Expo keeps leveling up!
Nearly 400 attendees joined in April, 2026—proof of a growing, connected exercise science community in Cincinnati.
From career exploration to real-world connections, the future is in motion. 💪

All the Kyoto things…interactive sumo show. Two of our students even got to try their hand against these giants! Who did it better: Sophia or Luke?

Kyoto is home to some 2000 shrines and temples dating back more than a thousand years. We hiked the Fushimi Inari shrine steps through its iconic Torii gates and visited Kiyomizu-dera temple. Being on these sites really takes you back in time, yet both are still active places of worship for Shinto and Buddhist people in Japan.

Trip is coming to an end. Day trip to Hiroshima to wrap things up.

Visited Ogimi Village on the northern part of Okinawa, one of five designated blue zones in the world. Blue zones are communities with an unusually high rate of centenarians.

We learned how nutrition, wellness, and mindfulness contribute to healthy, long lives in Ogimi Village.

Had a special lunch at Emi No Mise, a farm-to-table restaurant serving local vegetables grown in the garden across the street. Our menu included shikuwasa, ingana-znee, papaya irichi, brown rice with azuki, and goya and egg sautee.

Spent the morning at the US Marine Corps base in Okinawa where we learned about civilian jobs in exercise, wellness, and sport. Also took part in a demanding marine-inspired workout.

Cooled off in the afternoon with some snorkeling and scuba diving at Blue Cave on the East China Sea side of the island. Pics don’t do it justice. No filter on these. Water was really that blue!

Kendo and sweets! Today we took a kendo class in Osaka. Kendo combines the ancient art of Japanese sword fighting with mind, body, and spirt. It’s a “way” not just a “sport.” It’s also exhausting!

In the afternoon we took a Japanese sweets making class using bean paste and various powders from flowers. Some of us were more skilled than others with the art of molding these treats. 🤣
