“Molten Textures in Motion : Exploring the Intersection between fluidity and morphology ”

This shape reinterprets metals and natural elements, unveiling the delicate balance between chaos and precision in molten forms. This week, we’re taking a look at Wei-Huan Chueh’s "Industrial Housing Collection" for Matt Conway and Tucker van Leuwen-Hall's MSAUD IDEO Studio - "LA in Progress”.

Through design fiction, rapid prototyping, and video game technology, this studio brought a plurality of future LAs to life, focusing on the physical and digital implications of design outcomes at the neighborhood scale. Wei-Huan’s project imagines how prototypical housing types may evolve in a near-future Los Angeles, with industrial housing collections that offer the opportunity to customize and adapt industrialized copy-and-paste construction to accommodate for multiple functions and the needs of residents. “LA in Progress” is a studio in collaboration between AUD's MSAUD program and the global design company IDEO. It was co-instructed by Cory Seeger, UCLA AUD Alum and current Environments Design Lead at IDEO Tokyo.

Welcome to Rumble 2023, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design’s annual exhibition of student work. Now in its 15th installment, Rumble transforms AUD’s final reviews into an interactive installation and celebration, in which Perloff Hall becomes a stage and incubator for design dialogue and inquiry.

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design’s Güvenç Özel (@guvencozel) was one of the designers on view at this year’s Coachella, bringing large-scale installation “Holoflux” to the famed music festival.

Özel, who teaches in the MSAUD Program, focuses on the impact of interactive media and emerging technologies on architectural experiences and the human experience. “It’s interesting to think about emergent technologies not as an add-on or as an overlay, but a fundamental part of the experience. They’re designed simultaneously to create that experience.”

Like postcards from the future, architecture and design can show us conditions or realities that may not yet exist–challenges and opportunities alike, crises and triumphs, problems and solutions. AUD professor Hitoshi Abe (@atelier_hitoshi_abe) and UCLA’s xLAB have been collaborating with global partners on “Designing with Disaster,” exploring ways to anticipate inevitable natural disasters and to build new, more-resilient environments around the world. The resulting exhibition immersed viewers in seven possibilities–cities that absorb and distribute water in new ways, or that repurpose streets, highways, and rivers as new means of refuge and sites of habitation.

Japan House LA (@japanhousela) hosted “Living with Disaster” this spring, and AUD is welcoming a portion of the show for this year’s Rumble exhibition, which runs from June 12 and 13.

Thank you to Professor Abe, Japan House LA, and the many important collaborators and researchers who brought this knowledge together!
