The IDEAS Talent Fair hosted in May 2023 showcased a diverse and exciting range of topics including immersive AR & VR experiences to latest applications in robotics and 3D Printing. We welcomed potential employers, industry leaders and collaborators to IDEAS. This was an excellent opportunity for guests to interact with our top talents and for our students to network with industry professionals. taken in UCLA AUD - IDEAS 2.0 by @uclaaud.ideas

In this seminar, students were tasked with predicting the near future for different types of labor. They chose three different career paths and used text-to-image diffusion model generators to create visualizations of how these careers might change in the coming years. Students were encouraged to draw inspiration from a variety of sources and to use various languages in their creations. Once they had selected the output that best fit their predictions, they used 3D modeling to bring their visions to life. Finally, they compiled their scenes in gaming engines and applied a style transfer technique to stylize their vignettes. This is the work of Kuan Heng Chen, who depicted futures for architectural photographers, automotive designers, and cutaway map designers.

Virtual Herbaria questions the way we visualize and utilize large data sets, archives, and libraries. Virtual Herbaria revives the California Desert online Herbarium archive into an immersive experience through spatializing that data using augmented and virtual reality. Students designed these cacti and spaces as spatial libraries to walk through, interact, and be immersed in this fictitious California desert.

Rumble is BACK! 💫 Now in its 14th installment, Rumble transforms AUD’s final reviews into an interactive installation and celebration–a stage and incubator for design dialogue and inquiry. The literal and intellectual juxtaposition of AUD’s creative output frames the Department’s broader interest in cross-pollination across disciplines, curiosities, and experiences. The show will be on view for UCLA students, staff, and faculty on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7, 2022, 9 am to 6 pm. 🚨 PLEASE NOTE: capacity for the general public is limited; please learn more + register via link in bio.

Tune in over the coming days for a look behind the scenes, and check out our Stories on June 6 and 7 to follow along 🎉

BETWEEN WORLDS
Exploring new methods to conceive, create and represent interactive environmental narratives through immersive 'gaming' technology, students created environments where multiple worlds coexist. Investigations during the course commenced with visions of urbanism and the history and methods of representation and gaming. Students were introduced to basic concepts of generative design through the creation and subsequent combination of complex environments, to weave together narratives that span space.

THE PHYGITAL LABORATORY // NATHAN SU
Across visual media today, the boundary between real and unreal has become barely detectable. The Phygital Laboratory investigated seven methodologies used in contemporary virtual production. As a seminar group, teams worked to produce a user manual and series of demonstration projects for implementing these technologies at the UCLA IDEAS Campus.

The technology seminar “Get Ready For Rush Hour” taught by Shaun McCallum, looks directly at the implication of
digital technologies, the metaverse and emergent animate form
on urban architectures. Learning from digital material studies
and phygital compositions, projects will speculate on new
visual languages for an architecture rooted in a mixed-reality.
These novel visual languages will embody an architecture which
is never stagnant, always moving, irrespective of historical
comparative formal languages and always above 50mph.

By investigating familiar physical architecture and its formal
traits with non-traditional digital design languages we will
design phygital urban architectures that are procedurally
controlled and never stationary. We are currently confronted
with an architecture that needs a moment of critical self
reflection, as it is faced with the unfathomable speed in which
data and cultural software disseminates through the world of
tweets, Reels and Tik Tok loops to Discord discussions.
Through procedural, formal, material and texturing tools we
will design urban architecture and communicate our designs
through composited, looping animations and 3D printed object
tracking mixed-reality prototypes.

Project Title: Disjointed whole
This project is inspired by Ricardo Bofill’s La murala roja. Out of so many Architectural traits found in his building,  i.e., Space construction, Contrast with the surrounding environment, Continuity and Integrity, the three architectural trait_ Dynamism, Verticality and Movement + Levels are found to be the predominating ones. It’s fascinating to think how these traits are different from each other yet compliment and complete one another. This design philosophy leads to the idea for interlocking abstraction. Through this project we’ve tried to recreate the classical design language that is Minimalist yet Contemporary. by @uclaaud.ideas

Project Title: CHAOS IN ORDER
The film is using one shot to present the three traits and whole composition in both chaos and order way. The overall effect will be like a Christmas limited product advertisement. Early Merry Christmas to all!
