We're thrilled to welcome Daniel G. Chen to the 2026 class of PD Soros Fellows. 🎉⁣
⁣
Daniel was born in the Midwest to parents who immigrated from China in the late 1990s, drawn by the educational opportunities America offered.
⁣
He entered the University of Washington through their early entrance program, where he tracked an invasive species across Greater Seattle, studied the human immune response to COVID-19, and investigated cancer drivers across skin, lung, and pancreatic tumors—all before finishing his undergraduate degree. A Goldwater Scholar and Washington Research Foundation fellow, he went on to Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar before arriving at UCLA, where he now works with Professors Antoni Ribas and Katie Campbell on why some cancers resist immunotherapy—and how to break through that resistance.⁣
⁣
Daniel's goal: develop new lines of therapy that make immunotherapy work better for more patients, with fewer side effects.

Meet 2025 Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow Daniel Tang!

Daniel Tang was born in Canada and is the son of immigrants who left China to pursue higher education and opportunities for a better life—settling in Portland, Oregon. Daniel is now pursuing physician scientist training in the UCLA-Caltech MD/PhD program. Under the guidance of Mikhail Shapiro (2004 Fellow) at Caltech, Daniel is developing cell-based therapies that can be dynamically controlled in the body with non-invasive ultrasound. He hopes that these technologies, which enable precise control of the therapy once delivered into the body, will pave the way for new medicines that are more effective, produce minimal off-target side effects, and eliminate the need for invasive procedures.

Here’s our lightning round of questions with Daniel:
1. What’s a book, movie, or piece of art that changed your perspective on life? Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke.

2. What’s a tradition or cultural practice from your heritage that you cherish most? Making dumplings as a family.

3. If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be? Kobe Bryant.

4. What’s one thing you do to recharge or stay inspired? Getting lost in nature and bodies of water.

5. What’s your favorite way to celebrate a big accomplishment? A sweet potato cheesecake from Harriet’s Cheesecakes Unlimited in Inglewood.

6. What’s a piece of advice you’d give to a younger version of yourself? Be intentional about making time for friends and family.

7. What’s a food or dish that always reminds you of home? Pork and chive dumplings.

8. What’s your favorite musician or band? Too many favorites, but most recently Kendrick Lamar, Hozier, and Hajaj.

9. What’s your dream job? A physician scientist creating new therapies for patients.

10. What’s your superpower? Dexterous and steady hands.

Welcome, Daniel!
