Last but not least of our new UCLA-Caltech MSTP students… the one-and-only Max Gruber! Max hails from San Diego and completed his BS/MS degrees at @ucsandiego. He is a man of many talents: beyond being an avid backpacker, hiker, and rock climber, he is also a jazz guitarist, and enjoys playing music and going to concerts. Further, he is a concert photographer and enjoys getting involved in the music scene that way. He also recently got into gardening!

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

Having the opportunity and dedicated time to learn the medical context for the research I hope to pursue is such a privilege, and I feel gives me the strongest background to ask novel and interesting scientific questions. The structure of the MSTP provides a wonderful opportunity to truly make a translational impact, and I can’t imagine pursuing anything more exciting!

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

I chose UCLA-Caltech for a number of reasons, namely the world class neuroscience research community along with faculty and peers that have been so incredibly kind, supportive, and invested in my growth. The expansive clinical opportunities and diversity of people in LA make living and learning here so exciting!

What are your LA Bucket items?

See a show at every major music venue, lobster dive in Palos Verdes, become a regular at a local café, run in and complete the LA Marathon.

Introducing the next of our new UCLA-Caltech MSTP students… the marvelous Ben Fichtenkort! Ben is from Modesto, California and graduated from @harvard! As an avid enjoyer of the great outdoors, he enjoys backpacking, rock climbing, swimming, and fixing things.

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

I am interested in developing medical devices, so I am excited to get into the clinic and see firsthand how doctors use imaging and robotic technology. I can't wait to take some unmet needs into the lab and start working on a solution.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

I chose the UCLA-Caltech MSTP for several reasons. First and foremost was the opportunity to choose my PhD research lab from two of the world's best universities, working on a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that will make big impacts on the practice of medicine during my career. Secondly, California has my heart, and I love having so much fantastic hiking, camping, and rock climbing within an hour or two's drive of my apartment.

What are your LA Bucket items?

I want to swim at every beach from Malibu down to Palos Verdes, hike Mt. San Antonio in the winter, visit every free museum, and see an A-list celebrity in the wild!

Getting to learn medicine alongside my wonderful cohort (:

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

During the interview process, I felt very welcomed into the UCLA community by faculty and students at every stage, which solidified UCLA-Caltech as my top choice. I also love LA and was/am so excited to serve the community during my training.

What are your LA Bucket items?

I’ve been wanting to visit the Huntington Gardens since undergrad, so hopefully I’ll make it out there at some point. Also go to a Dodgers game

Next of our new UCLA-Caltech MSTP students, we have the marvelous David Zhou!

David hails from Delafield, Wisconsin and graduated from Johns Hopkins University! He enjoys cooking, baking, running, playing tennis, and (occasionally) reading!

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

I’m looking forward to getting to better know everyone in my cohort! Eight years is quite a long time, but I’m glad that I have seven friends with whom I can see it through together.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

I chose UCLA-Caltech largely because of the breadth of neuroscience research here. My broader research interest is in neuroscience, and it’s incredible to be in a program with faculty working on everything from developmental neurogenetics to neuromodulation.

What are your LA Bucket items?

I want to learn how to surf, hike in the Temescal canyon, try as many restaurants as I can, and one day run the LA marathon.

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

I am so excited to learn about medicine, care, and community organizing alongside brilliant classmates, and to continue to grow in my passion for anthropology, medicine, and global health.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

I was drawn to UCLA-Caltech for its institutional support for students on the social sciences track and the myriad of institutes and centers with connections to the Asia Pacific region. I was also excited by the opportunity to learn from the many physician anthropologists affiliated with the university.

What are your LA Bucket items?

Explore LA neighborhoods and hit up all farmer's and flea markets.

Introducing the third of our new UCLA-Caltech MSTP students… the amazing Preston Nibley!

Preston is from Orinda, CA and graduated from @dukeuniversity! He enjoys cooking, skiing, debate, cars, and trying new restaurants in LA, SF, and NYC.

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

I am most excited to have the time to properly learn the foundations of medicine beyond the minimum requirements for Step 1. I feel fortunate not to be rushed during my first two years since I can rely on a PhD to develop my research interests.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

Choosing to matriculate to the UCLA-Caltech MSTP was a homecoming for me as a native Californian. Training at an institution that is both clinically and scientifically world-class in one of the most exciting cities in the country is an enormous privilege; it is difficult to imagine a more robust and collegial training environment!

What are your LA Bucket items?

Going to Griffith Observatory, attending a movie premier, and exploring Catalina Island.

I’m most excited about being able to grow in both the clinical and research worlds and letting each perspective shape the other. I can’t wait to learn from mentors and peers who share the same passion for bridging science and medicine.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

I loved how collaborative and friendly the community felt, and I was excited by the breadth of neuroscience research happening here. Being close to family and the opportunity to work with diverse patient populations were also really meaningful to me!

Introducing… our new cohort of UCLA-Caltech MSTP students! First up, we have the wonderful Ethan Hung!

Ethan is from Irvine, California – just a hop, skip, and 1+ hours of traffic away! He graduated from @ucla and enjoys tennis & cooking in his free time! He has been playing tennis since middle school and loves to find new courts to hit at. Otherwise, many nights you'll find him cooking to destress after a long day of lectures. He also enjoys reading and playing board games with friends!

What excites you most about starting an MD/PhD program?

I'm excited to keep learning more about the research topics that excite me while getting to pursue the medical training that will allow me to serve communities close to my background. Having a close cohort that shares these passions makes it all the more fulfilling.

Why did you choose UCLA-Caltech?

The specific flavor of computational research at UCLA that suited my interests was a big factor. UCLA's MD cohort was well curated too, and I was inspired by my peers on so many paths in medicine beyond biomedical research. Being close to home and in a familiar environment made the choice to come back easier too!

Any LA Bucket list items?

I've been to most of the flashy landmarks in LA during undergrad, but there are still several theaters and restaurants I'd like to hit. Otherwise, I do have a longterm goal of playing every public tennis court in LA County!
