Final west coast stops … I think it’s obvious that launch week is catching up with me! But, wow, I’m still so fired up! Thank you to the extraordinary team at UCLA (@uclarepropolicy @melissagoodman000 @drofmenopause) and the unstoppable @assemblyrbk for hosting me and WHEN IN MENOPAUSE. The travel gods smiled on me (shocking) and somehow I pulled off back-to-back events in LA and the East Bay and met so many amazing women along the way! The other 49:states and Congress better take notice, CA is leading the charge for menopause policy and care in every way. CC @myalloy @womenshealth.advocates

1 in 4 people who get an abortion use telehealth. Under current federal law, people can get abortion care by mail or at a pharmacy after a telehealth visit. On September 9th, a court of appeals heard oral arguments in a case challenging access to telehealth abortion care based on ZERO science. We’re waiting for a decision in that case now. But remember: no matter what happens in the courts, dedicated and vetted providers will continue to work tirelessly to keep abortion pills accessible by mail - no matter where you live. Shoutout to Amanda, Senior Staff Attorney at the @uclarepropolicy, for helping us explain what's going on in LA v. FDA. The day Daniel Zimmermann arrived in the United States as a German exchange student, he walked into his new high school and locked eyes with Deborah Goldberg ’96. It was a moment neither of them would forget, and the beginning of a love story that would carry them across continents and, eventually, to @UCLA School of Law.

Deborah enrolled at UCLA Law, where she served on the Women’s Law Journal, and Daniel enrolled in UCLA Law’s LLM program. They married during Deborah’s second year, and in 1996, the pair graduated and began building a life together.

After graduation, Deborah channeled her legal training into advocacy work, driven by a belief that the law was a tool for protecting people. When she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2014, that instinct only deepened. She became a tireless patient advocate, facing her illness with what Daniel describes as “both grit and grace.” After five and a half years, Deborah passed away in 2020.

In her memory, Daniel established the Deborah R. Goldberg Scholarship at the UCLA Law Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy, supporting students dedicated to reproductive justice. “I wanted to find a way to honor her that truly reflected who she was,” Daniel says. “Deborah believed that advancing reproductive justice was a legal, cultural, and moral imperative.”

Mifepristone is commonly used in medication abortion, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved mifepristone in 2000, and its safety has been rigorously tested—decades of studies analyzing hundreds of thousands of patient outcomes have conclusively proven that mifepristone is safe and effective.

We are happy to forward this within our community -> “In this critical moment for reproductive and racial justice, The Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy (CRHLP) at UCLA School of Law is excited to share a new policy brief highlighting the growing momentum for a transformative approach: Unconditional Cash Transfers (UCTs) for Pregnant and Newly Parenting People.

Economic instability is one of the greatest barriers to reproductive autonomy, maternal health, and family well-being. UCT programs provide direct, no-strings-attached financial support, addressing the structural inequities that disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, Latina, and low-income parents. Across the country, states, counties, and cities are implementing UCT programs specifically for pregnant and newly parenting people, and early research shows promising outcomes for health and well-being. Yet, UCTs are not yet often part of reproductive justice and maternal health policy solution discussions. Now, there is a growing coalition of these UCT programs and the researchers who study them – the Mother Infant Cash Coalition – that has come together to help document the impacts of UCT programs, and help scale up public investment and make them sustainable.

CRHLP is also hosting a webinar on this topic March 14 at 12 PM PT with leaders from groundbreaking UCT programs across the country including Abundant Birth Project, Philly Joy Bank, National Council of Jewish Women | LA, RxKids, and The Bridge Project. We will discuss how these programs work, how they are funded, the latest research, policy developments, and opportunities for engagement.”

Shield laws protect patients that are looking to access gender affirming care and reproductive health services.

These laws can also protect the healthcare providers and staff that continue to offer this type of care.

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day: You, Too, Can Represent Survivors

Date: Thursday, January 9, 2025
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. ET
Format: CLE Webinar
Joint Sponsors: ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice, ABA CDSV, American Bar Association Center for Human Rights
Co-Sponsors: ABA Judicial Division

This webinar is part one of the National Human Trafficking Awareness Day CLE Webinar Series - This will be a #free CLE for ABA members and $25 for non-members.

Human trafficking is a pervasive issue. In the United States alone, hundreds of thousands are affected, with cases reported in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and most U.S. territories. Legal assistance is crucial for a survivor’s recovery. Effective, trauma-informed representation helps survivors overcome these challenges and continue on their path to recovery and freedom. The 2022 report by The Avery Center and National Survivor Law Collective (NSL Collective), however, paints a stark picture of the United States as a "legal desert" for this population in particular.

This CLE program will delve into how to use your skills and expertise to provide legal assistance to survivors. It will introduce the ALIGHT model – developed by the ALIGHT (Alliance to Lead Impact in Global Human Trafficking) Impact in Global Human Trafficking -- which focuses on providing technology-based, real-time pro bono opportunities tailored to the lawyer’s legal expertise and practice schedule. The program will also introduce other creative models for legal services delivery, including the Debt Bondage Repair Act (DBRA) Legal Clinic and the Survivor Counsel and Reuniting Families (SCARF) Initiative.

From the rise of originalism in constitutional interpretation to the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in 2022, courts have increasingly relied on this legal philosophy to justify the rollback of reproductive rights. However, recent state court rulings in North Dakota and Georgia demonstrate how constitutional protections at the state level are being used to challenge originalist arguments and safeguard individual rights. These cases highlight a growing resistance to originalism and its implications for reproductive autonomy. Join our experts as they examine how the North Dakota and Georgia cases push back against originalist interpretations of the law and explore why these legal battles matter. We'll discuss the judges' reasoning, the broader implications for reproductive rights, and how state constitutions are becoming critical tools for protecting privacy and liberty in the post-Dobbs landscape. This discussion will provide a comprehensive look at combating originalism in the courts, unpacking strategies and insights for advancing reproductive justice and challenging regressive legal frameworks.

Speakers:
• Diana Kasdan – Legal and Policy Director for the Center on Reproductive Health, Law and Policy, UCLA law
• Meetra Mehdizadeh – Senior Staff Attorney, US Litigation, Center for Reproductive Rights
