1 in 4 people who get an abortion use telehealth. Under current federal law, people can get abortion care by mail or at a pharmacy after a telehealth visit. On September 9th, a court of appeals heard oral arguments in a case challenging access to telehealth abortion care based on ZERO science. We’re waiting for a decision in that case now. But remember: no matter what happens in the courts, dedicated and vetted providers will continue to work tirelessly to keep abortion pills accessible by mail - no matter where you live. Shoutout to Amanda, Senior Staff Attorney at the @uclarepropolicy, for helping us explain what's going on in LA v. FDA. On Wednesday, Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, one of the featured speakers at our October 13 conversation, testified at the first-ever congressional hearing on menopause, convened by the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. The bipartisan hearing brought together experts to examine the gaps in menopause research, medical training, care, and policy solutions.

And on Thursday, UCLA’s Rajita Patil, MD,MSCP,FACOG participated in an FDA public workshop examining the evidence and knowledge gaps around testosterone use in menopausal women.

These conversations are rare and historic, and they bring attention to the work still ahead: investing in menopause research and women’s health in general, expanding the knowledge base of care providers, improving access to inclusive and timely care, and addressing the stigma that has too often kept menopause out of the national conversation.

Join us October 13 as Jennifer, Dr. Patil, Dr. Amander Clark, and CRHLP Director Melissa Goodman come together to discuss menopause care, research, policy interventions, systems change, and the opportunity to reshape the conversation around women’s health.

The evening will celebrate Jennifer’s new book, When in Menopause: A User’s Manual and Citizen’s Guide, and will include special guests and refreshments.

Join us in person or online. RSVP: https://luma.com/7tg25wjf

Medication abortion access increasingly depends on shield laws. As states continue to test the limits of these protections in court, CRHLP Legal Fellow Sofia Espinoza explains how shield laws are working to protect providers offering telehealth medication abortion across state lines—and why the cases still moving through the courts could shape the future of access nationwide.

A new policy brief from CRHLP and the Mother Infant Cash Coalition examines the baseline demographics of 977 participants across four unconditional direct cash assistance programs serving pregnant and postpartum people nationwide.

The analysis led by Graduate Researcher Monika Nayak, Research Analyst Leslie Serrano, MPH and CRHLP Research Director Subasri Narasimhan, PhD, MPH found that participants received an average of $920 per month in direct cash support, helping families manage the financial strain associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Participants described using cash assistance to cover basic expenses, bridge the gaps in paid leave, and to weather medical emergencies. Despite some participation in public assistance programs, participants reported barriers to accessing the public assistance they qualified for, including administrative burdens, documentation requirements, and income eligibility restrictions, highlighting that cash assistance filled in where public benefits sometimes fell short.

The report concludes that direct cash assistance can reduce financial and emotional stress during the perinatal period. Direct cash serves as an important tool for addressing the health and economic inequities that disproportionately affect low-income families and Black and Brown parents.

Mifepristone is commonly used in medication abortion, which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved mifepristone in 2000, and its safety has been rigorously tested—decades of studies analyzing hundreds of thousands of patient outcomes have conclusively proven that mifepristone is safe and effective.

The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked, pending appeal, a lower court ruling that tried to stop dispensing mifepristone via mail or pharmacy.

So what happens next?

In our latest video, Staff Attorney Cathren Cohen explains what the Court’s stay means, what’s still at stake in Louisiana v. FDA, and why ongoing litigation over mifepristone access is far from over. by @uclarepropolicy

Have you been wondering about the recent developments surrounding medication abortion? As Staff Attorney Cathren Cohen explains, the science on mifepristone is clear.

FDA reviewed mountains of scientific evidence before removing the in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone. Every major study pointed to the same conclusion: medication abortion provided through telehealth is safe and effective.

Want to know more about an important recent repro rights case?

For this week’s newsletter, Staff Attorney Cathren Cohen broke down a recent decision from a Michigan lower court, which struck down three abortion restrictions as unconstitutional under the state’s Reproductive Freedom for All amendment, passed by voters in 2022.

The ruling underscores the vital role state courts play in upholding reproductive rights in the post-Dobbs era.
