I’m a social worker working across forensic social work, disaster and emergency response, and policy and legislation. You can often find me in a library, a school, or out in my community—connecting people with resources and turning advocacy into action.

I’m currently spearheading the #FreeAbdus campaign in Connecticut, advocating for Isma’il’s freedom and the proposed Wrongful Conviction Relief Act to help people challenge wrongful convictions. Too often, the legal system gets it wrong, and families bear the consequences for generations.

My work is about supporting people through crises and challenging the systems that create them. Justice means listening, examining credible evidence, and correcting mistakes.

I’m officially on the NASW-CT ballot! ✅

I am incredibly honored to have been selected as a nominee for a position on the 2026–2027 Board of Directors for the National Association of Social Workers – Connecticut Chapter, just two months after graduating from UConn School of Social Work with my MSW!

I am currently in the running to serve on the Chapter Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification (CCNLI). About a month ago, after originally applying for a member-at-large position, I received a personal phone call from NASW-CT Executive Director Dawn Brown, who shared that after reviewing my application, she felt I would be an amazing fit for the CCNLI committee due to my background and work in leadership development, policy, legislative advocacy, and systems change.

Leadership development has been at the heart of my work for years— from training non-profit volunteers when I was still just a teenager in high school, developing emerging leaders in schools across our state, and creating opportunities for young people to recognize their own power, to advocating for institutional accountability, the implementation of trauma informed leadership practices across our systems, and environments that cultivate, rather than overlook, the leadership potential that is already present within our communities.

To be recognized for that work by my professional association so soon after earning my MSW is deeply meaningful. It is also an incredible opportunity to help identify, encourage, and elevate the next generation of social work leaders across Connecticut.

I am grateful to be considered, proud to see my name on the ballot, and excited about the possibility of serving the profession and the state I call home in this new leadership capacity.

If you are a NASW-CT member, I would be truly honored to receive your vote! 🗳️💙

Nine months, five Family Court Task Force meetings, four process recordings, three Survivor Subcommittee meetings, two student evaluations, a statewide Family Court Impact survey, a Domestic Violence Advocacy Certification, a legislative testimony, and 560 practicum hours later…

That’s a wrap. Thank you, CCADV!

Just two weeks left until I am Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews, MSW! 🎓💜

I can’t even believe that I am saying this… but this marks my final week at my MSW Practicum with the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

By the end of the day on Thursday, I will have completed the 560 required hours for my advanced standing placement, leaving me with only a few weeks of classes left before I walk across the University of Connecticut stage and cross the finish line into my career as a master level social worker.

I wholeheartedly believe that we always end up right where we are supposed to be when we are supposed to be there, and this has proven to be true with my placement at CCADV.

When I started the MSW program in June of 2025, I had no idea what was about to hit me or what my time at UConn would entail. I had no idea that I was about to lose my grandmother, have life as I knew it be flipped upside down, find myself in an active domestic violence situation, or be thrust into both the family & criminal court systems/processes.

There is something both surreal and deeply meaningful about completing a placement focused on domestic violence while actively navigating those realities in my own life. It changed the way I understand this work, not just intellectually, but on a human level. It sharpened my ability to see the gaps, the barriers, and the moments where systems get it right— and where they don’t.

Even deeper than that, though, it changed how I understand myself, my childhood, and the experiences that have shaped me into the woman I am today.

This experience didn’t just prepare me professionally. It clarified me personally. It solidified the kind of leader I am becoming— one who doesn’t separate lived experience from professional practice, but instead uses it with intention, integrity, and accountability. One who understands that the way we show up in these systems and advocate for survivors matters.

As I close out this chapter at the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, I’m stepping forward with a deeper sense of purpose, a clearer voice, and a stronger commitment to the kind of impact I want to make. Thank you, CCADV. 💜
