On Oct. 3, more than 20 UConn students became certified Election Moderators for the State of Connecticut!

As part of the UConn Hartford NextGen Elections Program, participants completed 10 hours of training through a combination of asynchronous and in-person sessions, including training with the Connecticut Secretary of the State. Following training, students will be connected with local election officials and assigned to polling locations, where they will work for at least two days during the 2026 election period. Connecticut’s 2026 general election early voting period is Oct. 19 through Nov. 1, with Election Day on Nov. 3.

The program, spearheaded by the UConn School of Social Work’s Nancy A. Humphreys Institute for Political Social Work and funded through a grant from Campus Compact, provided participants with a $125 program stipend and compensation for their election work at the rate established by their assigned election office.

“It’s important to get younger people interested and involved in the political process, and becoming a poll worker embeds them in elections in their own communities,” says Shannon Lane, director of the Humphreys Institute and professor-in-residence. “Being a poll worker is a very tangible form of civic engagement.”

Next month, Jie Zhao, a second-year Ph.D. student in the UConn School of Social Work, will give her first oral conference presentations at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

As lead author, she'll present a study using a dataset from Malaysia examining sex work, substance use, and depressive symptoms among 374 cisgender and transgender women who reported recent sex work.

Zhao’s UConn dissertation asks how telehealth-related health policy affects substance use care in rural areas, with a focus on federally qualified health centers. These serve low-income and rural populations and are directly shaped by federal policy.

They come to the @uconnsocialwork from universities across Connecticut and the Northeast, and as far away as California and England.

Their professional backgrounds are just as varied: corporate social responsibility, child welfare, and stage management.

Some are pursuing joint degrees in social work and public policy. One is a 35-year veteran of the corporate world. Another, a veteran of the U.S. Army.

What do they have in common?

They are among the UConn Master of Social Work students who have found their way to the Institute of Municipal and Regional Policy (IMRP) in the UConn School of Public Policy, where their required practicum experiences give them an opportunity to contribute to policy research and legislative issues affecting Connecticut communities.

@uconnsocialwork student Sean Excellent wants to help young Black men find a stronger sense of identity, purpose, and well-being — something he knows can be difficult to navigate alone.

Now a second-year master’s student concentrating in Individuals, Groups, and Families, Excellent is preparing to offer that support to others as a future social worker. Along the way, he is finding guidance of his own through UConn’s new Black Male Mental Health Professional Mentoring Program.

A joint initiative of the UConn School of Social Work and the @uconnneag School of Education, the program pairs graduate students with mental health professionals committed to supporting Black men and boys. Through mentorship, training, and professional development, it aims to help students establish lasting careers while strengthening a network of practitioners serving the Greater Hartford community.
