Katherine Johnson-Rogers is a sixth-year PhD Candidate in the Literature Department and a 2026 THI Summer Dissertation Fellow supported by Steve and Laura Wagner. In addition, Katherine participated in the 2024-2025 Abolition Medicine and Disability Justice Graduate Research Fellowship at The Humanities Institute. Katherine’s research examines the U.S. healthcare system, its relationship to capitalism, and how pretty much everyone who lives here can identify as a “patient” of that system at one time or another. She argues that the experience of being a patient is a political one and that therefore it can be used to build communities of solidarity to ultimately remake the system. Katherine reflects, “At the core of my work is a question of transformation. Rather than simply assessing the healthcare system as it is (costly, ineffective, etc.) in my scholarship I strive for praxis. Part of this is because of my commitments as an organizer. In so many ways my academic journey and my organizing journey have been fundamentally intertwined in my time as a graduate worker at UCSC.” Learn more about Katherine’s research in her THI profile at the link in our bio! 📷 Image descriptions: 1. Join us on Oct 21 at 7pm for a screening of Isaac Julien’s 1991 film, Young Soul Rebels, at the Quarry Amphitheater! Recently restored to its original director’s cut, the film is a coming-of-age thriller set in London in 1977, the year of the Sex Pistols’ debut and Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee. It follows two teenage best friends, Chris and Caz, who operate a pirate radio station, the Soul Patrol, and centers on the race conflicts and tensions among three popular youth movements at the time–skinheads, punks, and soulboys. Julien’s first feature, the film won the Semaine de la Critique prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and has garnered international acclaim since its release. Its soundtrack includes music by Parliament, The O’Jays, War, and Roy Ayers, among others. The upcoming event will begin with a brief presentation on the film’s context by Donna V. Jones (Assoc. Prof. of English, UC Berkeley) and will be followed by a Q&A with Julien and Jones. It is free and open to the public. Register and learn more at the link in our bio! 📷 Image Description: 1. Ja Bulsombut is a PhD Candidate in Sociology and was the Graduate Student Researcher for The Humanities Institute and the Center for Cultural Studies from 2024-2026. Ja’s dissertation, which is (currently) titled “Race, Gender, and the Politics of Victimhood in Conservative Asian America,” examines how race, gender, and class shape conservative and reactionary ideologies within Asian American communities. As a GSR, Ja engaged with a wide range of academic discussions and methods with scholars across disciplines. Reflecting on her experiences, she shares, “I feel very grateful to have been a part of these incredible intellectual communities for the past two years...[My work at THI] allowed me to be in conversation with and thereby situate my own work within some of the critical questions and intellectual debates driving humanistic and social inquiry in the contemporary moment.” Read more about Ja’s research and projects at THI in her profile at the link in our bio! 📷 Image descriptions: 1. Happy Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭 This summer, an intergenerational team from UC Santa Cruz’s Watsonville is in the Heart project, the Tobera Project and Pangasinan Polytechnic College traveled to the northern Philippines to record oral histories and reconnect elders with overseas relatives. Through the Saritaan project at The Humanities Institute, researchers digitized family photos and documents across Pangasinan province to trace migration roots back to California’s Pajaro Valley. Celebrate these powerful stories and transnational connections with us at the Fifth Annual Filipino American History Month Festival this Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM in Watsonville. Come support and honor the vibrant history connecting our communities across the Pacific. More information at the link in bio. 📸 Image descriptions. Our 2026 CMENA Arabic Language Fellows had a transformative summer studying Arabic, learning about Tunisian cultures, and enjoying the beauty of North Africa. Aisha Lemseffer (Undergraduate student, Legal Studies and Spanish) and Jonas Araujo (PhD student, History) spent three months atin Taa Marbouta in La Marsa, Tunisia. Aisha shares “Tunisia was an incredible experience. I learned a lot of Fusha Arabic at Taa Marbouta, while also picking up quite a bit of the Tunisian dialect through everyday conversations and life outside the classroom. I lived with a large Tunisian family, which gave me opportunities to practice Arabic, learn Tunisian cooking, and practice Darbouka drumming.” Jonas reflects “Life here has been so exciting; it's been one of the most enriching experiences of my life so far. I got to meet a Stambeli musician. Stambeli is an Afro-Tunisian musical and religious genre similar to Candomblé in Brazil. So, one of my future plans is to connect this to my research, which will make Arabic even more important.” 📸 Image descriptions: 1.
