This summer ten students took part in a Japanese immersion program featuring hands-on cultural, artistic, and linguistic learning across Japan. To get a unique behind-the-scenes look at their experience, we sent them with film cameras! They took some amazing photos 🙊💌

The students took JAPN 111 Japanese Arts and Beyond last spring, and they had the opportunity to explore the country alongside UCSC’s Assistant Professor and Japanese Language Program Coordinator Saori Hoshi. They visited top institutions like the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and the Yokohama Museum of Art and were able to attend special lectures at the Tokyo University of the Arts hosted by Professors Hikaru Fujii and Ryohei Kan.

Where would you like to go explore and study? 💭

We developed a brand new summer opportunity called the Summer Humanities EXCEL program. Students have a chance to do paid internships over the summer in Los Angeles County. 20% of our students are from LA so we want to make it easier for our students to get internship experience in their home communities. We are proud of our first group of 13 students and are excited to share some of their behind-the-scenes pictures and quotes 🥹🫰Are you from the LA Area? What nonprofit orgs would you want to intern with next summer?

📸 Image Description: Cover image reads, “Summer Humanities EXCEL Program in LA” showing an intern student with their 826LA mentor

826 LA:

“The most rewarding part was knowing that I was aiding in promoting literacy to youth in Los Angeles and connecting with a community of people that were so passionate about it.”

- Andrew P, Community Engagement Intern — 826LA

“Through this internship, I became more confident in my decision-making, and it allowed me to be more proactive with the students I worked with.”

-Alondra A, Workshops Intern — 826LA

““Being a CRES major has taught me a lot about social systems, capitalist systems, and practices that benefit/don’t benefit the community. Interning with 826LA has given me the opportunity to think critically about the work I do, how it impacts my team, how it impacts the community, and how it impacts the children we serve.”

— Jaya C, Community Engagement Intern — 826LA

Autry Museum of the American West:

“It’s really fun to know that someday, hopefully, the general public will be reading the things that I wrote and developed over the summer.”

This summer UC Santa Cruz student Rhea Vakil interned in the Fowler's curatorial department as part of the UCSC Summer Humanities EXCEL internship program.

Rhea spent the summer compiling and organizing research for a future exhibition, cataloging more than 300 groups of objects and narrowing them into a workable framework of roughly 80 groups.

Senior curator of African arts and manager of curatorial affairs Erica P. Jones praised her work: “Rhea, in 10 weeks, took care of a project that has been on my mind for years. This is no small feat.”

Happy Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭 This summer, an intergenerational team from UC Santa Cruz’s Watsonville is in the Heart project, the Tobera Project and Pangasinan Polytechnic College traveled to the northern Philippines to record oral histories and reconnect elders with overseas relatives.

Through the Saritaan project at The Humanities Institute, researchers digitized family photos and documents across Pangasinan province to trace migration roots back to California’s Pajaro Valley.

Celebrate these powerful stories and transnational connections with us at the Fifth Annual Filipino American History Month Festival this Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM in Watsonville.

Come support and honor the vibrant history connecting our communities across the Pacific. More information at the link in bio.

Our 2026 CMENA Arabic Language Fellows had a transformative summer studying Arabic, learning about Tunisian cultures, and enjoying the beauty of North Africa. Aisha Lemseffer (Undergraduate student, Legal Studies and Spanish) and Jonas Araujo (PhD student, History) spent three months atin Taa Marbouta in La Marsa, Tunisia.

Aisha shares “Tunisia was an incredible experience. I learned a lot of Fusha Arabic at Taa Marbouta, while also picking up quite a bit of the Tunisian dialect through everyday conversations and life outside the classroom. I lived with a large Tunisian family, which gave me opportunities to practice Arabic, learn Tunisian cooking, and practice Darbouka drumming.”

Jonas reflects “Life here has been so exciting; it's been one of the most enriching experiences of my life so far. I got to meet a Stambeli musician. Stambeli is an Afro-Tunisian musical and religious genre similar to Candomblé in Brazil. So, one of my future plans is to connect this to my research, which will make Arabic even more important.”

Last week during Cornucopia, we asked students to give us ONE word to describe the Humanities. They came through! Each student came up with a unique word to describe just how wonderful the Humanities are. We had a blast meeting them all and getting to know all of these slugs! 🎉 What’s your one word? 🤔

📹 Video Description: This post shows students walking around during Cornucopia. The screen reads, “We asked students to give us one word to describe the humanities,” followed by, “this is what they said.” The video is a compilation of students saying their words with the word captioned on the screen: Exploration, inspiring, important, expression, meaning, love, community, cool, creativity, empathy, progress, transformation, preservation, and life. by @ucschumanities
