🌟Dept. of Physics Prof. Tzer Han Tan has been selected for a 2026 Department of Energy Early Career Research Program award!🌟

His project, “Medium-Mediated Physical Learning in Nonreciprocal Active Materials,” was one of only 67 selected nationwide by DOE. Those selected will receive a combined $96 million through the 2026 Early Career Research Program (ECRP) to continue the pursuit of bold, innovative research.

Prof. Tzer Han Tan’s project asks whether out-of-equilibrium materials can learn and adapt through their own physical interactions. Combining experiment and theory, it will explore how medium-mediated interactions, mechanical memory, and nonreciprocal forces can enable active materials to acquire new collective behaviors.

👏Congratulations to Prof. Tzer Han Tan!👏

🌟Congratulations, Professor Pat Diamond!💎👏

Distinguished Professor Pat Diamond has been named the recipient of the American Physical Society’s 2026 James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of plasma physics.

Pat Diamond was selected for "theoretical contributions to the statistical dynamics and self-organization in plasmas, especially experimentally confirmed predictions of predator-prey interactions between turbulence and emergent zonal flows near the LH transition and the ExB staircase in confined magnetized plasmas."

A closer look at material surfaces can reveal a lot.

A new X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instrument at UC San Diego’s Qualcomm Institute analyzes the chemical composition and bonding within the top few nanometers of a material.

Researchers are already using it to study batteries, semiconductors, solar cells, LEDs, coatings and medical devices — and to uncover hidden impurities that could affect performance.

The system, housed in QI’s Nano3 shared research facility, already serves more than 60 university and industry users, including engineering and chemistry investigators.

Here, QI Lead Specialist Fabian Martinez Pallares ('24, Ph.D.) keeps the XPS machine running to help users obtain accurate data. (Photo by Areli Alvarez)

I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES WHEN I SAW THE GALACTIC CORE ABOVE MY HEAD! 🌌✨️🤯

I was able to image this Milky Way Galaxy last week right from San Diego at around 3am! No need to drive multiple hours away. A short 50 minute drive took me to a spot 5,000 feet in elevation with clear dark skies.

What makes this unbelievable, is the fact that all I used was my phone and a tripod (astronomy cameras and lenses were busy capturing data for something special). I can only imagine what will happen when I actually use my Astronomy camera along with the tracking mounts to capture this same piece of the sky.

We invite you to join the UCSD Physics Department as Professor Michael Brenner of Harvard University delivers the 2026 Memorial Lectureship on Thursday, May 14th. All are welcome!

🌎Reception begins in the Faculty Club courtyard at 4 p.m.
🌌Lecture begins at 4:30 p.m.
⚛️Following the lecture and a Q&A, join us for desserts in the courtyard

Abstract: The way we do (computational and theoretical) science is undergoing a transformation. I will discuss our recent efforts to build a science assistant, focusing on the manual creation of software to support computational and theoretical experiments. To this end we built an AI system that creates expert-level scientific software whose goal is to maximize a quality metric. I will go through a wide set of examples, from epidemiological forecasting to computational biology, to theoretical physics, to engineering.

The Physics Department Memorial Lectureship Series was established through the founding gift given by family and friends of Dr. Norman Kroll.

Jupiter 🌌 The 5th planet from the sun and the largest in our entire solar neighborhood✨️ is currently shining in our night sky! Make sure to look up after sunset to see a bright dot that looks like a star! If you face west and see a bright dot low in the sky, that is the planet Venus!

Jupiter takes close to 10 hours to rotate once. During the evening of March 24th, by capturing thousands of images of Jupiter in a span of 20 minutes, I was able to create an animation of its partial rotation.

Nerdy details:
@celestronuniverse CPC800 EdgeHD telescope 🔭
@zwoastro ASI2600mc camera 📷
@televueoptics Powermate 2.5x
13 videos captured x 2,000 frames each = 13 stacked images
Derotated 13 frames in WinJupOS to produce a final image.
