Congratulations to Leeana Peters, Ph.D., on receiving an NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)! Learn more about Leeana and her research below.

“My research involves understanding how immune cells function in disease relevant tissues, as well as how key genes that predispose people to risk for T1D impact this function. This award focuses on a specific T1D risk gene, BACH2, which is an important regulator of immune cell activation and immune tolerance, and uses genetic engineering and tissue-based modeling approaches to understand how deficiency in this gene impacts the function of T cells, particularly those that attack beta cells.

I hope that this research will lead to a better understanding of how T1D genetics contribute to the function of autoreactive T cells in tissues, as well as how we can better target them in the clinic.”

Study Abroad can become a powerful platform for original research, global engagement, and professional growth.

Through our UF in Istanbul Study Abroad, these four students are pursuing faculty-mentored research on topics ranging from Turkish feminism and refugee integration to artificial intelligence and transformative experiences in sacred spaces.

• @isabellalemos_ (Political Science and International Studies) is examining how Turkish feminists have responded to the country's conservative political shift.

• Mahdi Aziz (History, Anthropology, and Arabic) is studying the experiences and integration of Syrian refugees living in Istanbul.

• @lucnejame Luc NeJame (Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience and Philosophy) is exploring how sacred spaces and study abroad experiences can shape personal transformation.

• Emily Teodoru (Master of Urban and Regional Planning) is investigating cultural and political bias in large language models and how a model's country of origin influences its responses.

UF in Istanbul: Urban Studies from the Perspective of the Global South is a six-week, classroom-free study abroad program that immerses students in one of the world's most dynamic cities through field experiences and hands-on learning.

Learn more about these globe-trotting Gators using Istanbul as a living laboratory for research at the link in our bio! And stay tuned for UF in Istanbul Summer 2027!

At the UF College of Dentistry, researchers of all ages and experience levels can take their curiosity further.

Each year, Spring Synergy is a highly awaited mile-marker on their unique journeys of discovery. Pre-dental undergraduates, DMD students, residents, postdoctoral researchers and UFCD faculty all navigate this journey with different approaches and objectives, but the destination holds a shared vision for a brighter future of care, a more illuminated field of oral health science and exciting horizons of new knowledge.

Come to UFCD. Here, you'll explore, experiment and excel. A dental student and a faculty mentor pose for a photo in front of a research poster titled "Perceptions of Aesthetic Appeal in Smiles," which is decorated with a green ribbon for excellence.

Every year, student researchers are nominated by their departments to be join the CLAS University Scholars Program, a year-long cohort of undergraduate researchers who exemplify the research quality and innovation that happens at the University of Florida. This cohort receives faculty guidance, publishing support and structured programming to immerse into the life of a researcher.

In partnership with the Center for Undergraduate Research, we are thrilled to announce the 2026-27 University Scholars for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences!

Tag yourself in the comments and let us know what you'll be researching next year!
