Continuing our #SundaySpotlight series, we’re highlighting Athena Leskovics, Spring 26 alum. 🏠 Hometown: Macon, GA 🫵🏻 Currently: 4th year Political Science and International Affairs major 💼 Internship: Office of Senator Raphael Warnock Here’s what Athena has to say about her time in the WSP: “The WSP was truly such an incredible experience. I gained a unique insight into what life after college graduation could truly look like! Working in the United States Senate was a truly phenomenal experience, and I was able to learn so much and build a strong portfolio of work to carry with me. I learned what life in D.C. looks like and how to balance classes, a full time internship, and still make time to explore the amazing city with my friends. The friendships I made on WSP are also something I will forever cherish, and I am overall so grateful that UGA offers an incredible program such as this.” Join students like Athena and be a part of #TheBestSemester! Can you fit study abroad and an internship into one summer? Senior Melanie Frick did! This summer she traveled to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji and then completed a 9-week internship in Atlanta. Through UGA’s Discover Abroad Maymester to Australia and New Zealand, Melanie traveled from New Zealand’s Fiordlands National Park to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, learning about the natural history and biology of the South Pacific. Next, she traveled with a cohort of students to Fiji for an additional week of course work focused on ecotourism and conservation. From swimming with sea turtles to hiking through the Australian Outback, she earned 9 course credits during these 4 weeks that count toward her A.B. in ecology degree requirements and UGA’s Certificate in Sustainability. Melanie financed her study abroad largely with scholarships obtained through Odum’s Experiential Learning Fund, the Office of Sustainability’s SAM Grant, the Honors International Scholars Program, and scholarships from the Office of Global Engagement and the Office of Experiential Learning. For the Office of Sustainability’s SAM Grant, Melanie created a 2-minute video highlighting how an island ecoresort she visited employs different sustainability initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and protect the marine biodiversity that exists within the Great Barrier Reef. After returning home, she began an internship with the civil engineering company Kimley-Horn, where she visited project sites and surveyed streams, wetlands and protected species. Using ArcGIS, she created aquatic resource and species range maps, translating this info into freshwater delineation and protected species reports. She even traveled to Alabama with her team to survey gopher tortoises for an upcoming solar project. “This summer was filled with so many experiential learning opportunities, highlighting different ecological professional roles,” she said. “I have a better understanding of global environmental conservation and sustainable development, preparing me for the next chapter after college, where I will be returning to Kimley-Horn as a full-time environmental analyst!”
