Our next student spotlight is Liv Ritacco!

Liv is a fourth-year student majoring in Biology and Ecology, who was part of the inaugural Field Research and Conservation Maymester. Liv shares: “The class started like any other class: attending lectures, taking notes, and learning new material, but during the final week, it became something truly special.”

Students spent the first two weeks of the course in Athens learning about the diverse ecosystems of Key Largo, FL and designing research projects. During the final week of the course, students travelled to beautiful Key Largo, FL with Dr. William Norfolk for an 8-day field season to complete their planned research project.

Liv recollects: “Without a doubt, my favorite part of the experience was the snorkeling. Learning about marine ecosystems in a classroom is fascinating, but seeing them firsthand is something entirely different.”

“I’m certainly not waiting on the bus,” said third-year student, Colby Cannizzaro.

Freshman year, Cannizzaro had 20 minutes to make it to a class from south campus to north campus, but the walk was going to be 30 minutes. A lot of other students, like Cannizzaro, find themselves in the same pinch. They can either speed walk to class or wait on the bus which may not make it time.

Cannizzaro decided not to walk or bus to class… he decided to bike instead.

Using his bike from home, with only the back break working, Cannizzaro began biking to class. By the spring of his freshman year, he applied to be the Bike Programs Intern at the Office of Sustainability at UGA to take his biking a spin ahead.

Cannizzaro eventually worked his way up in the sustainability office, becoming the Circularity/Zero Waste Intern where he and his co-intern work to make UGA a zero waste campus.

From what started as a new mode of transportation, led to a new passion for Cannizzaro where he now aims to combine his skills and studies in data analytics and stakeholder management with sustainability.

“When I joined the Office of Sustainability, I wasn’t really a sustainability guy,” Cannizzaro said. “But once I joined and I realized how many great people there are in the Office of Sustainability, it kind of influenced me. I was like, this is something I’m really passionate about, and something where I could really make a difference.”

Visit https://sustainability.uga.edu/ to learn more about the opportunities available at the Office of Sustainability. You may discover a passion you never thought you had!
