The University of Georgia Graduate School is pleased to present the 2026 recipients of the Alumni of Distinction Award. This award recognizes graduates who have achieved meritorious success in their professions, distinguished themselves as mentors and role models in their fields, and made substantive impact at the regional, national, and international levels. These graduate alumni exemplify the University of Georgia mission, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things.” All graduate-level UGA alumni are eligible to be considered for the annual award. Recipients were nominated by their respective schools and colleges and selected by members of the Graduate Education Advancement Board. Stay tuned and follow the Graduate School social media to learn more about each recipient, https://grad.uga.edu/2026-graduate-school-alumni-of-distinction-awards/

Thanks to @ugaecology and the @turnerfdninc for an amazing panel discussion and showing of @groundswell_film! We were especially delighted to spend time with panelist and UGA Engineering alumna Jamila Norman (BSBE ’06), founder of @patchworkcityfarms! Jamila joined the panel along with Laura Turner Seydel of the Turner Foundation, Will Harris and Jodi Benoit of White Oak Pastures, and moderator UGA Ecology Dean Mark Hunter.

As it flows through North Georgia’s Murray and Whitfield counties, the Conasauga River has been home to a treasure trove of rare freshwater fish and invertebrates, at one time supporting more than three dozen species of mussels. Many of those species have disappeared over the past few decades, and experts now estimate the river has only a fraction of the mussels it once held. Freshwater ecologists with the University of Georgia River Basin Center (including faculty and students from Odum School of Ecology and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources), along with the University of Alabama and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, are working to restock mussels as a part of a larger plan to rehabilitate the river.
