As it flows through North Georgia’s Murray and Whitfield counties, the Conasauga River has been home to a treasure trove of rare freshwater fish and invertebrates, at one time supporting more than three dozen species of mussels. Many of those species have disappeared over the past few decades, and experts now estimate the river has only a fraction of the mussels it once held. Freshwater ecologists with the University of Georgia River Basin Center (including faculty and students from Odum School of Ecology and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources), along with the University of Alabama and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, are working to restock mussels as a part of a larger plan to rehabilitate the river. For three weeks in July, two Odum School students and one recent grad spent their days with different organizations up and down the Georgia coast, learning how One Hundred Miles and its partners work to preserve the special area. Hannah Moffatt, Christa May (BS ’26) and Daniella Pinzon piloted the new internship made possible with funds administered by Dean Mark D. Hunter, combined with gifts from alumni and friends. From nonprofits like the Ogeechee Riverkeeper to government agencies like the Department of Natural Resources to educational centers like the Skidaway Institute, the students learned skills and helped with specific tasks, but they also met different players in coastal conservation. They travelled the Georgia coast, exploring Jekyll Island and Little St. Simons Island, as well the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, as they learned about community empowerment, the importance of collaboration across organizations and understanding the historical context of spaces. by @ugaecology

Hannah Moffat, an ecology/political science double major, spent her summer applying to UGA Law and balancing two internships focused on environmental advocacy and international geopolitical events.

In July, Hannah participated in Odum’s inaugural internship with 100 Miles, a Georgia coastal nonprofit. She and two other ecology undergrads learned about conservation, zoning laws and community engagement around Jekyll Island. This experience took them throughout Georgia’s coast and surrounding areas, from a town hall meeting in Effingham County about OpenAI’s proposed data center to learning about environmental injustice at Sapelo Island and the Okefenokee Swamp.

“This experience introduced me to what advocacy actually looks like,” Hannah said. “Connecting those ideas [about environmental injustice] on this internship was really impactful for me because we got the chance to go to Sapelo Island and talk with Maurice Bailey, the CEO of Saving Our Legacy Ourself organization. [Through him] we heard about the environmental injustices happening on Sapelo Island related to the descendants of the Gullah Geechee people.”

Hannah plans to take what she learned through her work with 100 Miles and apply it to the type of advocacy she does through environmental law. The internship was paid for through the Odum School Dean’s Priority Fund, a grant to underwrite the costs of Georgia-based internship experiences for ecology undergraduates.

She also interned for British Standards Institution (BSI) Consulting as a research analyst. In this role, she researched natural disasters in Asia to report on for BSI’s public database and learned about the intersection of the environment and global supply chain.

This fall, Hannah is continuing her internship with BSI and refining her application to UGA Law. Her time on Jekyll Island gave her lots to write about in her application’s essays.

“This experience was so impactful. We got the opportunity to see literally everything under the sun. I don’t know how they crammed it into a three-week period,” she said. “It’s so hard to put into words what we did because we did so many different things.” by @ugaecology
