Big ideas need people willing to believe in them. Thanks to donor support, the work of @drandrewbb and @uhntoronto’s Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine has grown from a bold vision into Dunn House, with an expansion that will help even more people access housing, care and support.

None of it would have happened without donors who believed in the idea and helped make it real.💙

A little comfort can go a long way.

Through our Comfort Bag Program, Alli’s Journey provides young adults navigating cancer treatment with thoughtful essentials, creative touches, and a reminder that they’re not alone.

Each bag includes practical items to make hospital visits a little easier, alongside artwork and messages of encouragement created by fellow young adults who understand the journey.

🔬 With 130+ attendees and 12 talks, the @dkjei_uhn Vision Research Symposium brought together researchers, clinicians, trainees, staff, and industry partners for a day of engaging scientific discussions, collaboration, and networking.

🙌 Thank you to the researchers, clinicians, trainees, staff, and industry partners, who joined us for the day.

👁️ Together, we continue to strengthen the connections and collaborations that drive innovation in vision science and bring us closer to new treatments and cures for vision loss.

She came to cheer on her child’s soccer game. She ended up saving a stranger’s life.

Dr. Jessica Liu, Division Head, Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at @uhntoronto, was on the sidelines at Rosedale Park when a young man suddenly collapsed nearby. Alongside Dr. Hedieh Molla Ghanbari and Daniel Tiberini, she jumped into action, performing CPR and helping revive him until paramedics arrived to take him to UHN’s Toronto General Hospital.

Today, he’s fully recovered.

Dr. Liu was honoured with a Toronto Citizen Hero Award, because lifesaving moments can happen anywhere and heroes show up when you least expect them.💙

Congratulations to Robert Lao, winner of the 2026 Richard Rowe Award! 🏆

Presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, the prize recognizes outstanding research in childhood heart disease completed during training.

His research looks at how to better protect children’s hearts during congenital heart surgery. Working across pig models and human patients, he found a shared metabolic signature of surgical heart injury. He also showed that a GLP-1 metabolite can reverse it, opening the door to a new cardioprotective approach.

Supervised by Dr. Mansoor Husain (UHN) and Dr. Osami Honjo (SickKids), Robert’s research is a great example of the cross-institutional collaboration at the heart of the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research.

It’s #TraineeTuesday!

Meet Yuxin (Eileen) Mei, a PhD candidate in Dr. Martin Ingelsson’s lab at University Health Network’s @krembilresearch.

🧠 Eileen’s research focuses on understanding the differences between vascular amyloid beta and parenchymal amyloid beta in cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Alzheimer's disease.

October 17 marked 7 years since my living donor kidney transplant. 💚

Seven years.

Seven years of life I may not have had without one extraordinary person who gave me life in two different ways — first through the birth of our daughter, and then through the gift of a kidney that gave me a renewed lease on mine.

There really aren’t words big enough for that kind of gift.

Survival isn’t always a straight line, and transplantation wasn’t the end of my story. There have been difficult days, setbacks, fear, exhaustion, uncertainty and moments when I’ve wondered how much more I had left in me.

And yet, somehow, this little light inside of me keeps flickering.

It refuses to go out.

Because of these extra years, I’ve been able to watch my daughter grow. I’ve been able to create, sing, laugh, love, start over and meet incredible people through music, acting, cannabis education, events, work and community. So many people have entered my life who I simply would never have known otherwise.

My kidney transplant on October 17, 2019 was one chapter. My pancreas transplant on August 19, 2020 became another.

And neither chapter was written by me alone.

To my living donor — I could never repay what you gave me. I can only try to honour it by living these extra years fully and with gratitude.

To the surgeons, physicians, nurses, transplant coordinators, pharmacists, technicians and everyone at UHN’s Ajmera Transplant Centre who cared for me then and who continue to be part of my journey today: thank you. 🫶

And to every person who chooses to give blood, register as an organ and tissue donor, or consider living donation — you may never fully know how far one act of generosity can travel through another person’s life.

If sharing something this personal encourages even one person to learn more about giving, then it is worth sharing.

Seven years later…

Still here.
Still creating.
Still learning.
Still grateful.

The scars remain.
The story continues.
And that little light inside me is still flickering. 💚

A few weeks ago I delivered a "Resumes, Cover Letters and Leveraging AI" workshop to postdocs at @uhntoronto as part of Postdoc Appreciation Week!

As a trained scientist, I was able to share practical examples of how to translate daily research life into language more suitable for industry roles. This was the highlight of the session, and also what made it a success. 🌟

Looking forward to the next one!

Today is #WorldSpineDay.

💡 While the spine's wear and tear can be attributed to some non-modifiable risk factors such as age and genetics, there are also modifiable risk factors for spinal degeneration. Recognize these risk factors and take steps towards good spine health!

🔎 Dr. Carlo Santaguida, Clinician Investigator at UHN's @krembilresearch and Head of the Spine Program at UHN's Division of Neurosurgery, places an emphasis on one risk factor, often overlooked– smoking.

A missed step. A face you don’t see approaching. A blurry spot that glasses can’t quite fix. The signs of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) can be easy to overlook, but their impact can be life changing.

For people living with IRDs, those changes can raise difficult questions. Dr. Brian Ballios, Clinician Scientist and retina specialist at @uhntoronto’s @dkjei_uhn, is helping connect patients to specialized care while pushing the boundaries of retinal research.

With every new discovery, we’re moving closer to a future where more patients have answers, more families have hope and more people can hold on to the gift of sight.💙

☢️ 10/10 ETHOS RADIATION ☢️🎉🥳
.
.
.
✅ After completing my first 25 sessions of External Beam Radiation, I proceeded with an additional 10 sessions of ETHOS radiation. A more targeted, highly precise approach to fighting my Stage Three Invasive Pelvic Tumour.
.
.
.
📸 I didn’t document as much of these 10 sessions because, let’s just say, things got a little more medically demanding, technical, and VERY precise!
.
.
.
👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ every session included approximately 10 medical professionals behind the bolted radiation vault, including radiation oncologists, nurses, technicians, and more. Basically, an entire team working together to give me my fighting chance. And for that, I am beyond grateful. 🙏🤍
.
.
.
🤖 BUT HERE’S WHERE THE STORY GETS FUNNY… 😂😂😂.
.
.
📌 My very first ETHOS session was actually the day BEFORE the one documented and shared…
And I am VERY proud to announce that I accomplished something truly spectacular
🥁🥁🥁
.
I BROKE THE ETHOS MACHINE.
.
I BEAT AI. 🤖💥😂
.
.
.
🤓 ETHOS uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help map and adapt radiation treatment plans created by the radiation oncology team.
