Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! 🔥

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I could not finish the introduction of this project without a deep appreciation for the community that made this a possibility. The @uic.design is more than an institution. When I decided to move from Portugal to Chicago for an opportunity to teach, one of the main reasons that drawn me there was the culture and positive environment of the School. The love and care from the staff and faculty, alongside the passion and energy from students, makes this the perfect space for projects like this to flourish.

We were able to receive guests and have them use the press at the @uic.print.lab; We brainstormed ideas and troubleshooted production issues with their specialists (@daniel.mellis and @__bench_press); We used the diverse lab spaces and tools around the school (guided by @jacob_polhill, @supple_prints and @offset_ajones); We were able to keep our finances stable, order materials and store them during production; We hosted public events, and had students showcasing the work developed in class that inspired this project.

Without all of this, the project wouldn't make any sense. When we think about the role of an academic institution, this is the perfect example of what it should be: a space for experimentation, collaboration, community and critical yet positive development. This is a project that honors the rich history of Graphic Design at UIC, and I couldn't be more thankful for it to be a part of it too.

It's official!

A couple of months ago I received a grant Award for Creative Activity from @thisisuic, which allowed me to start working on something that will wrap up the research that I've been doing over the past years at @uic.design.

A complete alphabet, designed by old friends, former students, mentors, new connections and strangers.

I never thought that a simple school assignment could grow this big, but I am thankful for everyone's support and kind words.

Over the next months/year, I will be printing a lot of letterforms in our Vandercook with @amirror. We are just starting—a lot of pictures, process, thoughts and learnings will be shared here.

This alphabet publication will be produced in a very limited print run, but hope to be able to share the final results digitally with you all. It is exciting to see how people are engaging with the assignment and creating letterforms using @lego bricks.

More to come soon, but for now... thank you!

Introducing the NOVA Light Series:

With wooden bases for the Desk lamp I and III collection and marble bases for the II collection, each NOVA lamp offers its own distinct aesthetic.

In particular, NOVA Desk Lamp II provides the added versatility of being easily removable from its base.

WHY NOVA?

A NOVA, an astronomical phenomenon, brings about the sudden emergence of luminosity.

How can we harness light to subtly blend with surfaces?
