Thank you for coming out to the Summer RISO Residency Book Launch last week! We celebrated the work of our residents & had books to browse + work to admire both in the @openarchive_uic and spilling out into the exhibition space. It was an incredible turn out and such great collective energy supporting self-publishing, risography, and book arts @uic.design

💐 A huge congratulations to Katon Black & Grace Spee for putting on a beautiful exhibition and for sharing their work with us!

📘 A special shout out to @jaynekelley of the Open Archive for hosting the event!

📕 On behalf of the Open Archive + UIC School of Design’s Print Lab, we invite you to the book launch for our Summer Risograph Residency this Thursday, Sept 24th at 6pm in Open Archive (Room 3100).

🌈 Grace Spee & Katon Black, will exhibit publications, paper sculpture, prints, and artist books made during their time on residency in the @uic.design Print Lab this summer.

🟡 This event is free + open to the public! It's hosted by the Director of the Open Archive, Jayne Kelley ( @jaynekelley ) and Print Lab Specialist, Madeleine Aguilar ( @__bench_press ) . Food, drinks, and a DIY button-making station will be available!

"Where Data Becomes Light" brings together scientists, visualization researchers, and artists to showcase the power of scientific visualization through sweeping animations and vivid imagery drawn from cosmology, climate science, biomedical research, materials discovery, physics, chemistry, and artificial intelligence.

Presented through a collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory and the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois Chicago, this exhibition invites audiences to experience discovery through light, motion, and wonder.

🎙️ Today, we share a conversation with Anne H. Berry (@annehberry), a designer, writer, and educator who arrived in Chicago in 2024 to lead the School of Design at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Anne speaks with host Christian Solorzano (@xnslrzn) about her path into design, her belief that designers have a direct responsibility to democracy and civic life, and what it means to build a career rooted in service. She discusses her book The Black Experience in Design (2022) and her upcoming Guiding Principles for Inclusive Design Values (2026) — and why both feel more urgent now than ever.

The conversation explores what drew Anne to Chicago, what sustains her on the hard days, and why she believes the most important work any of us can do right now is mentor the designers coming up behind us.

A glimpse into Katon's time as our @uic.design Summer Risograph Resident 🌀📎

@nattybwoychicago was such a joyful energy to have in the Print Lab! Katon delved deep into the analog, utilizing the riso scan bed to its fullest potential. He created vibrant multi-layered collage posters useing reclaimed books from the Open Archive. He also honored his daily sketchbook practice by making a full size recreation of his teal blue @moleskine , rendering each pencil & pen drawn spread in copper RISO ink.

We jammed regularly in the studio, he played killer beats on the speakers, and he worked dedicatedly everyday to produce 2 editions of publications and a poster series. It was my deepest pleasure working with him to transform his wild ideas into book form 🙏🏼🖍️

We're so excited about the new school year, we're throwing a welcome party 🎉

On Tuesday, August 25, there will be a series of events welcoming UIC Design students, faculty, and staff to the new year, including a welcome address, an all school picnic with activities and snacks, and individual program meetings with important information for the upcoming year. Attendance is strongly encouraged.

Students, please note that regular classes will NOT be held this day, with the exception of DES420 Interdisciplinary X Design, taught by Noah Wangerin.
