🍰‼️ AAMP's First Small Group Outing of the Semester!

A couple of weeks ago, the AAMP small groups went on their first outing. These outings are arranged entirely by the mentors and are meant to help grow friendly relationships between mentors and mentees.

A popular choice for these outings is to gather for food! We love seeing everyone hanging out with each other and wonder where people will go for their next outing~

Image description: This poster highlights some photos that AAMP small groups have taken during their outings. All photos feature people smiling and posing for the camera. Each photo was taken at a different location, but they are all in a cafe or restaurant. One photo shows people holding ice cream, while others show people enjoying drinks or food. The poster itself is light pink and is decorated with blue and darker pink motifs.

✨️💪 AAMP Large Group Outing Highlight!

In the beginning of the semester, we held a Bowling Party to welcome our mentors and new mentees! People from different small groups and class sessions were able to meet for the first time, and everyone had a great time bonding over pizza, icebreaker bingo, and some friendly competition.

Who will be our top bowling athlete next time? 🤔

Image description: A purple poster with neon light motifs showcases photos of a group of people sitting together in a bowling alley. They are all facing the camera and are smiling. Bowling lanes extend behind them. One picture is of a TV showing people's scores.

You are invited!

On Tuesday, September 29th from 5:30-7PM, the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center and the Global Asian Studies program are hosting a film screening at UIC on a docuseries called Southeast Asian American Journeys. The filmmaker, Quyên Nguyễn-Lê, will be in attendance for a Q&A with snacks provided!

ABOUT THE DOCUSERIES:
Produced in association with Southeast Asia Resource Action Center and the Center for Asian American Media, Southeast Asian American Journeys explores the stories of five local SEAA refugee communities who, while being shaped by their resettlement journeys, have transformed the landscape of which they are a fundamental part. The docuseries is composed of five shorts that each focus on a different local SEAA refugee community and topic (e.g. Montagnard, Hmong, Iu Mien, Khmer, and Vietnamese). For more about the topics and communities explored, check us out at go.uic.edu/seaajourneys or follow the filmmakers at @seaajourneys_doc!

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR/FILMMAKER:
Quyên Nguyễn-Lê is a queer vietnamese filmmaker born to boat refugee parents where Chumash and Tongva lands meet in Los Ángeles, California. Quyên’s film work–spanning between documentary and scripted genres–focuses on the ways histories are deeply felt in the quotidian everyday.

Quyên’s debut feature, co-directed and produced with Tad Nakamura, Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement (2024), uses rare archival material to create a vivid portrait of iconic Asian American movement activist Nobuko Miyamoto’s decades-long artistic career. Recently, Quyên was also an Associate Producer for two Sundance award winning feature films–Julie Ha and Eugene Yi’s Free Chol Soo Lee (2022) and Sing J. Lee’s The Accidental Getaway Driver (2023).

New from the Dis/Placements Project! A comic book anthology, “Tales of Uptown”, produced by UIC students from the spring 2026 course, GLAS 300: Global Asia in Chicago, under the instruction of Prof. Anna Guevarra. The anthology features stories of Asian American community leaders and activists in Uptown, Chicago based on oral histories collected between 2017-2025. Students analyzed these oral histories and transformed an aspect of each story visually. The anthology is thematically anchored by the theme of “community,” visually represented by Isabelle Dizon’s @issafdizon cover art.

✨ 🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Gayatri Reddy On Co-Authored New Graphic Narrative, "What Can Hijras Teach Us About Governance, Gender, and Wealth? A Brief and Spectacular Graphic Narrative." 📣

Dr. Reddy co-authored a new graphic narrative published in Transgender Studies Quarterly (TSQ) with collaborator Shakthi Nataraj (Lancaster University, UK). Titled "What Can Hijras Teach Us about Governance, Gender, and Wealth? A Brief and Spectacular Graphic Narrative," this work reflects the kind of interdisciplinary scholarship that the GWS Program proudly supports and celebrates.

This illustrated social history traces how hijras—trans-feminine communities in the Indian subcontinent—have long served as a linchpin in state regulations of social (dis)order across colonial and postcolonial contexts. The piece emphasizes how the regulation of gender often emerges from material regulation, including the governance of livelihoods, kinship structures, and wealth, while also highlighting the enduring resilience of hijras and other communities who continue to thrive despite these systems of control. Designed as a teaching tool, the narrative engages broader audiences in conversations about gender, sexuality, caste, labor, and kinship.

For more information and to read "What Can Hijras Teach Us about Governance, Gender, and Wealth? A Brief and Spectacular Graphic Narrative," visit gws.uic.edu or check out the GWS linktr.ee in our bio!
