Starting this Fall 2025! The Asian American Movement Archives at UIC
This archive will document and preserve the history of the 31-year student-led movement (1991-2022) for Asian American Studies that paved the way for building Global Asian Studies (GLAS) and the Major at the University of Illinois Chicago. This project is led by GLAS Founding Director, Dr. Anna Guevarra in collaboration with UIC alumni and former student leaders who have led and contributed to this movement. There are two ways to support this project! If you were involved in this movement as a student, faculty, or staff and have material (photos, letters, petitions, event flyers, etc.) to contribute, or are willing to be interviewed, please email: Dr. Anna Guevarra at guevarra@uic.edu. For UIC students, if you would like to be part of the team to gain some research and archiving skills and be part of this important project, please email Dr. Guevarra as well. by @uicglas

Meet the Asian American Movement at UIC Archiving Team who is hard at work in helping archive the 31-year student-led movement (1991-2022) that helped pave the way for establishing the youngest of the interdisciplinary ethnic studies programs at UIC - Global Asian Studies - GLAS and the Major.  We are proud of this fierce team of students!

If you would like to join the team,  or you are a UIC alumni and have materials to contribute, or if you would like to find ways to support this project, please contact Prof. Anna Guevarra - guevarra@uic.edu #WeAreGLASHalfFull

Francis Balquin is a third-year PhD student in the Department of History. His areas of expertise include 20th century US history, Asian American history, and comparative empires. He hopes to write his dissertation focusing on Filipinos in the Chicagoland area. Working on the Asian American Movement, for him, is an opportunity to acknowledge the many people who brought GLAS into reality and to ensure that their stories are preserved and accessible.

Stefanie (Stef) Demayo is a fourth year undergraduate student majoring in psychology. Besides academic passions in psychology and neuroscience, she loves to craft handmade jewelry. She’s excited to be a part of the team and contribute to the Asian American Movement archival project as a means of learning more about a movement that resonates with her.

Avni Gupta (she/her) is a third year UIC undergrad student majoring in Global Asian Studies and minoring in Moving Image Arts and Museum and Exhibition Studies. Harboring a love for cinema and filmmaking as well as history and art, she was drawn to the Asian American Movement archives project for the opportunity to discover new stories.

Joon Sol (they/them) is an undergraduate student majoring in Global Asian Studies and minoring in Black Studies. They chose this path to hopefully become a professor in ethnic studies one day, but until then are very happy with their life as a barista. As a current Global Asian Studies Student Advisory board member as well as an Asian American Student Academic Program ( AASAP) General Office aide, Joon exists in spaces that were only ever possible through the advocacy of UIC’s by @uicglas

You are invited!

On Tuesday, September 29th from 5:30-7PM, the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center and the Global Asian Studies program are hosting a film screening at UIC on a docuseries called Southeast Asian American Journeys. The filmmaker, Quyên Nguyễn-Lê, will be in attendance for a Q&A with snacks provided!

ABOUT THE DOCUSERIES:
Produced in association with Southeast Asia Resource Action Center and the Center for Asian American Media, Southeast Asian American Journeys explores the stories of five local SEAA refugee communities who, while being shaped by their resettlement journeys, have transformed the landscape of which they are a fundamental part. The docuseries is composed of five shorts that each focus on a different local SEAA refugee community and topic (e.g. Montagnard, Hmong, Iu Mien, Khmer, and Vietnamese). For more about the topics and communities explored, check us out at go.uic.edu/seaajourneys or follow the filmmakers at @seaajourneys_doc!

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR/FILMMAKER:
Quyên Nguyễn-Lê is a queer vietnamese filmmaker born to boat refugee parents where Chumash and Tongva lands meet in Los Ángeles, California. Quyên’s film work–spanning between documentary and scripted genres–focuses on the ways histories are deeply felt in the quotidian everyday.

Quyên’s debut feature, co-directed and produced with Tad Nakamura, Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement (2024), uses rare archival material to create a vivid portrait of iconic Asian American movement activist Nobuko Miyamoto’s decades-long artistic career. Recently, Quyên was also an Associate Producer for two Sundance award winning feature films–Julie Ha and Eugene Yi’s Free Chol Soo Lee (2022) and Sing J. Lee’s The Accidental Getaway Driver (2023).
