I wasn’t expecting this today. At this afternoon’s citizenship ceremony in Brisbane, @julianhillmp, Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs and Assistant Minister for International Education, who presided over the ceremony, @reneecoffeymp and Senator Paul Scarr each took a moment during their remarks to acknowledge me and the work I have been privileged to lead with the Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. (@ukrqld) The video below captures Senator Scarr’s words: «Peter represents the very, very best of Australian values. He has been an outstanding leader of our Ukrainian Australian community during its time of greatest need.» He reflected on being at Ukrainian Club Brisbane in early 2022, meeting some of the first Ukrainians arriving after Russia’s full-scale invasion, and on how our community supported those rebuilding their lives here. «Peter, you and the Ukrainian Australian community have done such a wonderful job uniting all the Australian people to put that collective arms around the Ukrainian Australian community.» I’m incredibly grateful for those words, and for the acknowledgement from Julian and Renee as well. All three have been tremendous supporters of the Ukrainian Community of Queensland, Ukrainians in Australia and Ukraine. Senator Scarr has stood alongside our community since the earliest days of the full-scale invasion, and that support has meant a great deal. None of the work they spoke about has ever been the work of one person. Over the past four and a half years, volunteers, organisations, businesses, governments and everyday Australians have stepped up to support Ukrainians arriving here, helping people find homes, jobs, schools, friendship and a place to belong. To have that work acknowledged today, on an afternoon when 70 Ukrainians in Brisbane became Australian citizens, made it especially meaningful. I’m very proud of what our community has achieved together, and incredibly grateful to everyone who has stood with us along the way. 💙💛 Слава Україні. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! 🇺🇦🇦🇺 #CommunityLeader #UkrainianCommunityOfQueensland #UkrainianAustralian

🇺🇦🇦🇺 70 Ukrainians became Australian citizens this afternoon in Brisbane. It was an incredible honour and privilege to be part of a very special citizenship ceremony, representing @ukrqld, where 498 people from 53 countries took the Australian citizenship pledge and officially became Australians. Among them were 70 Ukrainians. For our community, that made this afternoon particularly special. Many of these newest Australians have arrived here since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, having been forced to leave behind homes, family, friends and the lives they knew. Over the past four and a half years, we have watched so many Ukrainians begin again in Australia, building new lives while remaining deeply connected to Ukraine, its language, culture and identity. Today, 70 of them reached another extraordinary milestone. They became Ukrainian Australians. 💙💛🇦🇺 I was very proud to join them for the ceremony, presided over by The Hon @julianhillmp MP, Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, alongside @reneecoffeymp, Senator Paul Scarr and Cr Steven Toomey. We also managed to gather most of our 70 newest Ukrainian Australian citizens together for a photo that I think captures something incredibly special. Seventy different journeys. Seventy new Australians. And 70 people who will always remain proudly Ukrainian. Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Tony Burke MP’s official message to new citizens ends with two simple words: “Welcome home.” To our 70 newest Ukrainian Australian citizens, congratulations. Ласкаво просимо додому. Welcome home. 🇺🇦🇦🇺 #UkrainianAustralian #AustralianCitizenship #WelcomeHome #CommunityLeader #UkrainianCommunityOfQueensland

We were told it would be impossible to obtain the necessary approvals in time to get a combat officer out of the trenches from the frontline and bring them to Australia in time for Ukraine’s Independence Day - but we managed to do it. We were determined to share Viktoriia’s story. It was an honour to welcome Lieutenant Viktoriia “Malvina” Savkiv @sav_kivvi to Australia for the AFUO’s 2026 Advocacy Tour. Across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, Lt Savkiv shared her personal experience and the urgent needs of Ukraine’s defenders. Together with our Ukrainian-Australian community, political leaders, diplomats, defence and technology stakeholders, we strengthened the call for air defence, continued military and humanitarian support, stronger sanctions enforcement on russian-origin oil and deeper Australia–Ukraine cooperation. This tour also turned advocacy into practical action. Our community raised over $70,000 for life-saving equipment for the 214th Separate Assault Battalion “OPFOR” and support for veterans. Thank you to everyone who opened their doors, raised their voices, donated and stood with Ukraine. Our strength is in our unity - and our work continues. A pretty special afternoon at Government House in Canberra with Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia (@gg_australia) and His Excellency Mr Simeon Beckett SC. On behalf of @ukrqld, I dropped in with a medivnyk, a traditional Ukrainian honey cake. We already knew Her Excellency was a fan. She even gave medivnyk a mention in the video message she sent us for Ukrainian Festival Brisbane this year. Nice to discover that Mr Beckett is a fan too. Even better, it ended up doubling as a slightly belated birthday cake for Her Excellency, whose birthday was on Saturday. I only found that out while we were standing there, so the timing worked out rather perfectly. Her Excellency also spoke about the credentials ceremony she had hosted earlier in the day for newly appointed ambassadors, and how a number of them had spoken about their support for Ukraine. She reaffirmed her own support too, and was incredibly warm in her words about Ukraine, our community and the work being done across Australia. A small piece of Ukrainian hospitality, but a really meaningful visit. Very grateful for the warm welcome, the conversation, and for Australia continuing to stand with Ukraine. 🇺🇦🇦🇺 #CommunityLeader #StandWithUkraine #UkrainianCommunityOfQueensland #GovernmentHouse #AustraliaStandsWithUkraine

“Warmth for Ukraine” campaign - impact on the ground 💙💛 From January-May 2026, people across Australia came together in so many different ways - running, attending film screenings, supporting cultural events, visiting exhibitions, fundraising in their communities, and simply choosing to care. That support travelled all the way to Ukraine 🇺🇦 With your help, we were able to support: 🏫 10 schools 👥 more than 5,000 children 🐶 shelter caring for 50 animals 📍across 6 regions of Ukraine In total, AUD $113.4K was delivered through @futureukraine_australia "Warmth for Ukraine" campaign (combining donations received via our PayPal page, Stripe and direct bank transfers) helping provide generators, power stations, a solar battery and a heater to places where reliable energy can make an enormous difference. To every person who donated, organised, attended, shared, volunteered or stood behind this campaign - thank you. What began as a call for warmth as russia ruthlessly attacked Ukraine’s energy grid, became something much bigger: energy, resilience and solidarity reaching Ukraine from across Australia 🇦🇺 That solidarity is ongoing. The campaign is still open, and with another winter approaching, russia's attacks on civilian infrastructure are only set to intensify. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation here: https://futureukraine.org.au/fundraisers/warmth-for-ukraine/ or via direct bank deposit.
