🇺🇦🇦🇺 Strengthening partnerships and advocating for Queensland’s Ukrainian community! 🤝

UCQ President @peter.bongiorni recently met with Nina Sprake, the new Executive Director of @multiculturalqld, for a productive discussion about our community, the challenges we face and how we can continue working constructively with the Queensland Government.

Key topics included:

💙💛 Supporting displaced Ukrainians: The lack of targeted funding for essential support services is putting some of UCQ’s critical work at risk. We explored ways to address this challenge and improve long-term sustainability.

🎉 Ukrainian Festival Brisbane 2027: Following the extraordinary growth and popularity of our festival, substantial changes may be needed to accommodate increasing attendance and ensure its future success.

🇺🇦 Protecting Ukrainian identity: We discussed concerns surrounding SlavFest and the importance of respecting Ukraine’s distinct national and cultural identity.

🏥 Language accessibility: Our concerns regarding BreastScreen Queensland’s exclusion of Ukrainian have now been escalated for further consideration.

We also expressed our appreciation for the Queensland Government’s existing support, including funding for our Youth Community Connector program and Ukrainian Festival Brisbane.

🙏 Thank you, Nina, for your time, openness and willingness to explore practical solutions together.

Strong communities need strong partnerships, and we look forward to continuing this important work! 💙💛

🇺🇦💙💛 Some wonderful news for the Ukrainian Community of Queensland!

We’re delighted to announce that the Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc. (UCQ) has been successful in securing funding through the Federal Volunteer Grants program! 🎉

Last week, our President, @peter.bongiorni, attended a morning tea hosted by Kara Cook MP, Federal Member for Bonner, recognising 48 local organisations that collectively received more than $66,000 in grant funding.

Volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. Whether it’s organising cultural events, welcoming and supporting newly arrived Ukrainians, fundraising for Ukraine or simply lending a hand when needed, so much of what we achieve is only possible because of people who generously give their time.

A huge thank you to Kara Cook MP for hosting us, recognising the contribution of local volunteers and supporting the important work of community organisations like ours.

And, most importantly, thank you to every UCQ volunteer. This recognition belongs to you! 💙💛

🎬 OKEAN ELZY: STORMWATCH is more than a film about music.

It is a journey through Ukraine’s history, through the voices, dreams and struggles of a generation — and through the music that has become part of the country’s story.

For Ukrainians, it is a chance to remember.
For Australians and friends of Ukraine, it is a chance to listen, learn and understand.

With English subtitles, everyone can experience it.

This is a charity screening, with all profits supporting Ukraine through the Defend Ukraine Appeal.

We are also giving away two tickets to Vakarchuk's concert in Brisbane on March 9, with everyone attending the movie having a chance to win 🎫

🇺🇦🇦🇺 70 Ukrainians became Australian citizens this afternoon in Brisbane.

It was an incredible honour and privilege to be part of a very special citizenship ceremony, representing @ukrqld, where 498 people from 53 countries took the Australian citizenship pledge and officially became Australians.

Among them were 70 Ukrainians.

For our community, that made this afternoon particularly special.

Many of these newest Australians have arrived here since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, having been forced to leave behind homes, family, friends and the lives they knew. Over the past four and a half years, we have watched so many Ukrainians begin again in Australia, building new lives while remaining deeply connected to Ukraine, its language, culture and identity.

Today, 70 of them reached another extraordinary milestone.

They became Ukrainian Australians. 💙💛🇦🇺

I was very proud to join them for the ceremony, presided over by The Hon @julianhillmp MP, Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, alongside @reneecoffeymp, Senator Paul Scarr and Cr Steven Toomey.

We also managed to gather most of our 70 newest Ukrainian Australian citizens together for a photo that I think captures something incredibly special.

Seventy different journeys. Seventy new Australians. And 70 people who will always remain proudly Ukrainian.

Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Tony Burke MP’s official message to new citizens ends with two simple words:

“Welcome home.”

To our 70 newest Ukrainian Australian citizens, congratulations.

Ласкаво просимо додому. Welcome home. 🇺🇦🇦🇺

💙💛 Ukraine represented at the Multicultural Moon Festival on the Sunshine Coast

On Sunday 27 September, members of our Ukrainian Community of Queensland Inc on the Sunshine Coast proudly represented us at the Multicultural Moon Festival in Mooloolaba.

Throughout the day, the Ukrainian stand became a meeting point for Ukrainians from across the region, including visitors currently staying on the Sunshine Coast from Ukraine, Germany and Israel.

A particularly special moment came when Ukrainian performers took to the festival stage for the first time in the event’s six-year history.

A huge thank you to Yuliya Rai and Iryna Pyrog, who travelled more than 200 kilometres for the evening performance and gave the Sunshine Coast audience a fantastic introduction to Ukrainian music and culture. The response from the crowd was wonderful, with plenty of applause, energy and support. 🎶🇺🇦

Thank you also to Tetyana Kovalchuk, Lloyd Johnston, Lisa Stanton, Sharon Bevan and Volodymyr Martynov, as well as the many members, families and friends who helped organise and run the Ukrainian stand and came along throughout the day to support our performers and proudly represent Ukraine.

Events like this are about more than simply having a stand at a festival. They help build connections, bring Ukrainians together, and make sure Ukrainian culture and identity remain visible throughout Queensland.

We are proud to continue supporting our growing Ukrainian community on the Sunshine Coast and helping create more opportunities for Ukrainians to come together, participate and be heard.

Donations collected during the festival were directed to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

💙💛 Thank you to everyone who made the day possible, and to the Multicultural Moon Festival for welcoming Ukrainian culture to the stage for the first time.
