The King of Keyboard, Rizan Said, announces a double LP of futuristic electronic dabke and shaabi.

As Omar Souleyman’s longtime musical architect, Said spent nearly two decades turning Korg presets into zurna, saz, tanbura and buzuq, building the sound that carried Souleyman’s voice out of Syria’s Jazeera and around the world, from the cassette circuit through Hassake, Deir Ez Zor and Qamishli to stages like Le Guess Who and Iceland Airwaves. Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi ما وراء الشعبي (Beyond Shaabi) is his third solo album, and his most far-reaching yet. Cosmic, electronic dabke pushed toward its next destination.

The album is also a reunion; the same team behind Omar Souleyman’s iconic 2011 Björk collaborations reconvenes at Sundlaugin, sonic home of @sigurros in Iceland fifteen years later — this time joined by engineer/composer Úlfur Hansson, with Said at the center.

This is Syrian electronic music at its finest.

KOU014. Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi ما وراء الشعبي (Beyond Shaabi). Out November 6.

Four editions: standard black; the gunmetal grey cohort edition; an artist edition with a red/silver smash finish and the record on cassette format in collaboration with @syriancassettearchives and the M3 ULTRA edition: everything in the artist edition, plus a high-polish stainless steel pendant inspired by Rizan’s signature Korg M3 designed by Jordan Rundle. All edition jackets carry Rebeka Arce’s cover art in periwinkle foil stamping. Link in bio. Digital available, and worldwide retail distro through @secretlydistribution via @ideologicorgan

'The Wind Took it Away' is out in the world. 👒

This song was written during a sweltering pandemic summer, after finally escaping the trappings of a horrible situation. I spent a lot of sleepless nights in my new flat listening to Nara Leão, Milton Nascimento and Baden Powell and watching films like ‘L’histoire d’Adèle H’ and ‘Days of Heaven’. When I later sent @randallbdunn these references, he immediately understood how to flesh out this world. I am in awe of all the beautiful musicians who contributed their magic to bring this song to life. I hope you enjoy. 🤎

Following the announcement of her upcoming album 'The Lying Swans' (out Oct 30th), today Gloria de Oliveira returns with her new single 'The Wind Took it Away', a wistful chamber pop meditation on the aftermath of love, which follows on from the atmospheric first single 'Fading Faces'.

Tracing the fading remains of connection, the song is carried by intricate Bossa Nova percussion underneath a lush arrangement and de Oliveira’s sweetly intimate vocals, infusing the song with a playful lightness despite its deep melancholy. ‘The Wind Took it Away’, delicately produced by @randallbdunn, suggests acceptance, finding grace in what can no longer be held onto.
