The King of Keyboard, Rizan Said, announces a double LP of futuristic electronic dabke and shaabi.

As Omar Souleyman’s longtime musical architect, Said spent nearly two decades turning Korg presets into zurna, saz, tanbura and buzuq, building the sound that carried Souleyman’s voice out of Syria’s Jazeera and around the world, from the cassette circuit through Hassake, Deir Ez Zor and Qamishli to stages like Le Guess Who and Iceland Airwaves. Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi ما وراء الشعبي (Beyond Shaabi) is his third solo album, and his most far-reaching yet. Cosmic, electronic dabke pushed toward its next destination.

The album is also a reunion; the same team behind Omar Souleyman’s iconic 2011 Björk collaborations reconvenes at Sundlaugin, sonic home of @sigurros in Iceland fifteen years later — this time joined by engineer/composer Úlfur Hansson, with Said at the center.

This is Syrian electronic music at its finest.

last summer I met @bendikgiske in a Berlin park, and immediately connected sharing music and mutual friends.

a few months later we put together HETEROGLOSSIA, a performance/installation for Saxophone and 10 meter long magnetic strings, for @sequences_art_festival .

the audio signal from Bendik's saxophone is converted into (very) high current, and run through piano wire surrounded by magnets, resulting in an eerie and resonant acoustical response. high amplitude signals heat up the strings enough to slacken and thus continuously bend the pitch - i feel this is only the beginning of exploring the swirling glissandi of Bendik's wondrous conversations with my strange apparatus ❣️many thanks to @elinhansdottir for the images and video! by @ulfur_

my sister, my friend and deep collaborator @elinhansdottir has a way of opening portals to other dimensions through her work.

together we recently opened an exhibition @gerdarsafn where an alphabet of vagabond rubber bands speak in mysteries, as they envelop a beautifully gold plated five leaf clover.

additionally, an 8 channel speaker array projects a phantom sound, swooping around in a chaotic pattern, tracing figure eights, circles and spirals as it
wanders around the exhibition space.

it was a deeply moving experience, having the opportunity to spend time with, and be inspired by, one of my all time favourite human beings in the world - my sister.
