Body Gua Sha: an upper-body release ritual

I begin this Body Gua Sha routine across the chest, then work along the upper arms, shoulders and the back of the neck.

We often focus on the face, but the upper body deserves attention too. This soothing sequence helps me release tension and feel lighter through the chest, arms and shoulders especially on days when I’m feeling tight or puffy.

If you’re navigating perimenopause, you may find this a lovely ritual to add to your self-care routine.

Save this to try later, and tell me: where do you hold the most tension, your chest, shoulders or neck?

Body gua sha isn’t just for the body.

The same tool can work on your neck and face, you just change the pressure. Slow strokes, light touch, lots of oil. No scraping, no redness on the face.

The neck holds a lot of tension, and releasing it often shows up in your jaw and face too.

Save this for your next ritual. 🌿

Most people think facial Gua Sha is about the stone.

It isn’t. The real intelligence is in the stroke.

Before it became a beauty trend, Gua Sha was a traditional East Asian healing practice. Guā means “to scrape,” while shā refers to the temporary red speckling produced during stronger body treatments.

But facial Gua Sha should not create sha. The pressure is gentler and the movements are slower because we are working with delicate facial tissues.

In Chinese medicine, Gua Sha is used to move stagnation and restore the flow of Qi and Blood. Through the lens of modern anatomy, its effects may come from mechanically influencing circulation, superficial tissue, retained fluid and muscle tension.

And here is something fascinating: a 2025 study found that regular facial Gua Sha changed facial measurements and reduced muscle tone and stiffness. It did not primarily work by changing skin elasticity. This suggests that the “sculpted” effect may come partly from releasing and reorganising tense soft tissue, not from melting fat or changing your bone structure.

Another little-known fact? It doesn’t have to be jade. Traditional practitioners have used horn, ceramic spoons and even coins. The material is less important than the angle, pressure, direction and preparation of the tissue.

Facial Gua Sha is not magic.

It is an intelligent conversation between your hands, your nervous system, your circulation and the tissues beneath your skin.

Save this—and remember: never aggressively scrape your face. 🌿
