For many, the image of cancer research involves looking through a microscope at cells spread across a flat petri dish. Ariel Abraham, a senior Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics major minoring in Data Science, is working to change that perspective by developing a 3D system that mimics the actual tumor environment.

Read more about Ariel's research at the link in our bio! 😊

On Friday, October 2, Rohey presented her research at the inaugural Mickey Dale Family Foundation Engineering the Future of Organ Transplantation Symposium at 4MLK in Baltimore!

Her poster, “Fibronectin-Derived Ligands Modulate Macrophage Morphology and MMP-9 Activity in PEG Hydrogels,” explored how fibronectin-derived molecules influence the shape and activity of macrophages within 3D hydrogels.

The symposium brought together researchers across engineering and medicine to share advances in organ transplantation, regenerative medicine, and related technologies. Congratulations to Rohey on sharing her work and contributing to this exciting area of immune cell research!

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $17.3 million to establish the Collaborative for the Realization of Autonomous Biomanufacturing (CRAB) Lab at the University of Maryland, one of only 20 Programmable Cloud Laboratory (PCL) Nodes funded nationwide. The initiative is led by Fischell Institute Director William Bentley and co-led by Gregory Payne, Martha Wang, Alan Zaoxing L., and Hussain Dahodwala.

The AI-enabled, remotely accessible lab will enable researchers across the country to design, execute, and analyze automated biomanufacturing experiments. The project brings together the University of Maryland, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Ginkgo Bioworks, a pioneer in synthetic biology and fermentation automation, to advance automated biomanufacturing, train the next generation of bioengineers, and strengthen Maryland's leadership in autonomous science.

760 engineering students. 143 research projects. All eight engineering departments. All on display under one roof for one night.

We're still feeling the vibes of last week's Capstone Design Expo, and we're thrilled to share these photos of some of the great work and excitement.

Congratulations to our innovative students, thought-provoking faculty, dedicated staff, meticulous judges, generous sponsors, and wonderful attendees. What a team and what an event! Testudo points to a student who stands before her research poster pointing back to Testudo

In this season of celebration and graduation, we’d like to take a moment to recognize the 4 departmental recipients of our newly named Graduate Program Mentoring Excellence Award.

This award recognizes graduate programs that effectively make mentoring a core program responsibility by building a culture of high-quality, inclusive, and accountable mentoring - a valuable part of the UMD graduate student experience.

This year’s awardees were nominated by:
Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences - Jonathan Poterjoy (DGS)
Fischell Department of Bioengineering - Ian White (DGS) and Melanie Prange
Biological Sciences Program - Eric Haag (DGS) and Zarna Pala
Criminology and Criminal Justice - Wade Jacobsen (DGS) Four mentors smiling at a celebratory event. Pictured are Ian White (DGS) and Melanie Prange from the Fischell Department of Bioengineering, and Eric Haag (DGS) and Zarna Pala from the Biological Sciences Program.

Honored to share that I’ve been named a 2026 Ford Global Fellow with the Ford Foundation 🥳

This year’s #FordGlobalFellows cohort includes 32 leaders working to dismantle inequality from the ground up.

I’m excited to continue building work that challenges how we design biomedical systems—and who we center in that process.

There’s always #MooreToCome 🤭😘
