BIOE Associate Professor and Fischell Institute Affiliate Fellow Jenna Mueller and her research team have received two new NIH R01 grants totaling $6.7 million to advance low-cost cancer technologies for low-resource settings.

One project will advance KeyScope, a low-cost laparoscope designed to expand access to minimally invasive surgery. The second will support development of a topical ethanol-based gel to treat low-grade cervical dysplasia in collaboration with BIOE Associate Professor Katharina Maisel.

The new funding will help move both technologies closer to clinical use, including a planned KeyScope clinical trial in Uganda in 2027.

The Kuo Lab in the University of Maryland's Fischell Department of Bioengineering recently welcomed high school students for a hands-on introduction to bioengineering research.

Students toured the lab, interacted with graduate and undergraduate researchers, and learned how bioengineering is helping develop new therapies for musculoskeletal injuries. The visit, organized with STEM for Her, also gave students the opportunity to ask questions about research, graduate school and careers in STEM.

Congratulations to Joel Thomas! He was selected for the Fischell Department Outstanding Junior Award, one of the department's highest undergraduate honors, in recognition of his academic achievement and research contributions.

A junior in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering’s Biocomputational Engineering (BCE) program at the University of Maryland, Thomas is building experience in cancer research, medical imaging, and artificial intelligence–exploring how computational tools can improve patient care and drug development.

“Receiving the Outstanding Junior Award was a very meaningful and humbling honor for me,” he says. “It reflects not only my academic work, but also the support and encouragement I’ve received from mentors, faculty, family, and friends along the way.”
