Big opportunity beyond the game! 🎓

Baylei Sandford of Women’s Golf and Rihanna Gayle of Cross Country/Track & Field have been selected to represent UMES at the 2026 NCAA Legacy Lab in Indianapolis throughout this week.

The NCAA Legacy Lab is a highly selective four-day entrepreneurial development program designed for Division I, II and III sophomore and junior student-athletes. Out of approximately 500 student-athletes nominated nationwide, only 32 were selected to participate, making this a unique opportunity to learn, connect and develop alongside a select group of student-athletes from across the country.

The program helps student-athletes take the skills, experiences and ideas they have developed through sport and turn them into potential business ventures and opportunities beyond athletics. Participants engage in hands-on workshops, mentorship, networking and collaborative activities while exploring areas such as NIL and personal branding, entrepreneurship, and socially responsible business.

The Legacy Lab encourages student-athletes to think beyond their playing careers and begin building a meaningful professional legacy while they are still competing. NCAA covers travel, lodging, meals and program materials for selected participants.

As we close out Pride Month 2026, I'm grateful to share the latest findings from the HBCU Pride Recognition Project, my annual study documenting university-wide Pride Month recognition across Historically Black Colleges and Universities 🌈

This year, 12 HBCUs proudly showed up for their LGBTQ+ students, alumni, faculty, and staff through university-wide Pride Month recognition. While I didn't attend most of these institutions, it genuinely brought me joy to see them publicly affirm members of their campus communities🙌🏿

At the same time, this year's findings continue a trend I've been tracking: the number of HBCUs formally recognizing Pride Month has declined in recent years. That makes the leadership of these 12 institutions even more meaningful.

My hope is that this research not only documents history but also encourages conversation, resource sharing, and continued progress. Every student deserves to know they belong, and I look forward to the day when even more HBCUs proudly celebrate and support their LGBTQ+ communities.

Thank you to these 12 institutions for showing up. Happy Pride 🏳️‍🌈🫶🏿 #PrideMonth2026 #DeeperLove
