Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) vs. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD): Deciphering the Difference

PGS helps identify embryos with normal chromosomes, enhancing the chances of successful implantation during In vitro fertilization (IVF). PGD detects specific genetic disorders such as thalassemia and hemophilia and helps to prevent their inheritance. Both techniques support healthier pregnancies and are pivotal in modern reproductive technology.

Why is genetic testing so important? Why do we need to be genetic tested? Why was I tested after I got diagnosed and not before?

So excited to launch this new page on website with my medical advisor @drallisondipasquale and @myriad_oncology to help raise the much needed awareness for genetic testing and answer so many questions about this life-saving topic!!!

Genetic testing is so important if you have a family history of cancer, I never knew this! My dad passed away of lung cancer :(

Getting tested is simple and may help you understand your risk for breast cancer. It can also help create a personalized treatment plan. Please visit new page called TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR GENES under EDUCATE tab.

We had:
- Assigned readings (articles, chapters from a book about someone whose family members had a genetic condition)
- Discussions about the readings and went over case studies in small groups

Overall impression:
- It's a great way to get a general overview of the profession (covered different genetics specialties)
- You get out of it what you put in (learn more if you actually do the readings and contribute to the discussion)
- You could make friends/connections if you put in the effort (we had a shared list with people's names and contact information)
- It was a short time commitment (three 1-hour sessions over 3 months and the readings only took about 1-2 hours)

When I attended this was the timeline:
- Applied in early June 2020
- Heard back mid June 2020
- Program started end of June 2020 and ended in August
- 3 sessions total (all virtual)

Gabrielle Ernst is another member of the Class of 2022! She is originally from Loveland, OH.

Gabrielle graduated from Ohio State University in 2019 with a major in Molecular Genetics and a minor in Public Health. Before coming to graduate school, she worked at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State University, where she worked in a precision cancer medicine lab helping understand genetic alterations in the FGFR gene.

Recently, she biked 100 miles with her quaran-team from Columbus, Ohio to her hometown of Loveland, Ohio for Pelotonia, which is an organization that raises money for cancer research!

Welcome to Michigan, Gabrielle! 💛💙
