We would like to congratulate Julia Cameron, who was awarded the 2026 James V Neel Genetic Counseling Fellowship🥳👏🧬

Julia was selected for her thesis titled “Clinical Outcomes of Atypical Findings on Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing.”

This fellowship is awarded annually to a second-year genetic counseling student at our department retreat in honor of James V. Neel, M.D., Ph.D., a pioneer in human genetics. Dr. Neel established one of the first clinics to evaluate and counsel patients with hereditary conditions and founded the University of Michigan Department of Human Genetics in 1956.

Congratulations, Julia, on this accomplishment! We can’t wait to see your continued progress on your thesis project! 💙💛

This past weekend, our second-year students Julia and Karina volunteered at the Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) booth at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Detroit!

FORCE supports individuals and families affected by hereditary cancer through education, advocacy, research, and community support. The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides walk raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research, prevention, and patient care.

At the booth, Julia and Karina connected with attendees and invited them to add encouraging messages to a banner for themselves or loved ones they were walking in support of. It was an amazing opportunity to hear individuals’ stories and help connect them with resources and support💗 by @umgcp

Her experiences also include working as a summer camp counselor for children with disabilities, volunteering as a crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line, and serving as a learning assistant for an undergraduate genetics course. Additionally, Julia had the opportunity to study abroad in New Zealand, broadening her understanding of different cultures and perspectives. In her free time, Julia enjoys reading, crocheting, playing pickleball, and exploring new places.

It is first-year Friday!

Eileen earned her Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto. During her undergraduate studies, she worked in developmental biology research laboratories, where she investigated cardiac organogenesis in zebrafish as well as the mechanisms governing mitochondrial DNA inheritance in fruit flies. She also gained valuable research and clinical experience at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), where she participated in research examining stimulant-induced psychosis and shadowed a psychiatric counselor, an experience that deepened her understanding of complex patient care. Additionally, Eileen served as a Peer Educator with Planned Parenthood, where she staffed helplines to address community inquiries and connect individuals with vital sexual and reproductive healthcare resources. By offering empathetic, evidence-based guidance, she helped empower community members and facilitate seamless access to essential health services. On campus, Eileen was actively involved in student leadership, serving on her program’s student union as well as the Undergraduate Research Student Association.

In her free time, Eileen enjoys playing board games with friends, spending time outdoors, and exploring local restaurants.

Fun Fact: Eileen travelled to an island full of bunnies during her trip to Japan last summer. by @umgcp
