"O frost bitten blossoms,
That are unfolding your wings
From out the envious black branches.
Bloom quickly and make much of the sunshine.
The twigs conspire against you!
Hear them!
They hold you from behind!"

- William Carlos Williams, 'Aux Imagistes', 1914.

*long long time ago in another city ...wondering downtown without a plan and looking for inspiration ... i spied this 🪑. Bought it without questioning its value in my life. Aptly named "The Sad Chair" #katiestout - artist had just graduated from RISD ... shortly after that was invited to show at 2014 Whitney Biennial and won a quirky TV show (Ellens Design Challenge) 😂 ... which i stubbled upon channel surfing... Since then her work keeps getting more ingenious and inventive. And coincidently her work will be in Newport Ri this week showing with Art & Newport (games, gamblers and cartomancers) show @NRF at Vernon House.

Just over a year ago, artist Katie Stout (@ummmsmile) and her husband left their longtime home of New York City for Germantown, an upstate enclave where the couple bought a 19th-century church property. The church’s enormous nave, complete with a bell tower and arched stained-glass windows, is now Stout’s studio, where she has been working on fantastical pieces for an upcoming solo exhibition at @ninajohnsongallery in Miami. Although she didn’t grow up religious, creating art in the new space can feel at times like “a spiritual act,” Stout tells W in our latest issue. At the link in bio, take a closer look inside the whimsical compound Stout shares with her growing family.

Between 2018 and 2021 I acted as art director of the Fonderia Artistica Battaglia Design Department, the historic bronze foundry in Milan, Italy. I brought talents from around the world to create artistic projects that showed innovation in bronze production.

Today I’m proud to share the last project of my mandate, which, after a long and meticulous production, is finally ready and on display at @randcompanynyc in New York. Katie Stout @ummmsmile closed the program with her residency and production in Milan last year. She was chosen especially for her unique and unexpected use of diverse range of material, layering her own rich sculptural language. Katie’s work evokes simultaneously a sense of dark irony and the joyful celebration of childhood innocence. The new series of bronze works has been developed exclusively for R & Company. I’m happy to end my mandate with the Foundry with such an inspiring, contemporary and fresh project.
Congratulations Katie for the great work and your perseverance!
