For H.E.R.E.’s the Thing, our back page where we ask a local to write about an object that connects them to what’s meaningful about the Hudson Valley, artist Katie Stout (@ummmsmile) chose a simple folded washcloth cat from the Shaker Museum collection.

“Shaker is shorthand for a certain kind of American virtue: restraint as aesthetic, stripped ornament as moral position, laundered through design culture into an ideology,” writes Stout.

“The Hudson Valley has its own mythology as a place people come to curate, where good taste festers. The farmhouse, the ceramics, the sourdough, the carefully chosen object on the carefully chosen shelf. The washcloth is the antidote. It costs nothing, it signals nothing.”

Rising through the Atrium above The Imagination Café at Selfridges London, Katie Stout's "Twilight: Ascension" transforms the space into an immersive environment suspended between memory and dream.

Created as part of "Dream On," @theofficialselfridges season celebrating creativity, the installation unfolds from floor to ceiling as a choreographed field of monumental inflatable forms. Each began as a small clay sculpture modeled entirely from memory before being translated to architectural scale, preserving the familiar distortions and fleeting imagery of the liminal space between waking and sleep.

Studio visit: @ummmsmile

Katie Stout works in a former Methodist church, circa 1880, in Germantown, NY. Bell tower. Stained glass. A graveyard out back. She jokingly calls herself a decorative artist. Her own work, she says, is naive pop.

Here’s the inversion at the center of it: the domestic object is her subject and her weapon at once. A lamp that’s outgrown the word lamp. Ceramics three times taller than the kiln, built whole, cut apart, fired, and reassembled, because the idea refuses to fit the equipment.

Stand in front of one of her lamps for a minute. It stares back. Her work is in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Arts and Design. Her church is where it’s all born. taken in Germantown, New York by @ummmsmile
