What an incredible weekend! UMNSVP could not have been more honored to have the opportunity to host the Display Day and Start Line for the 2026 @americansolarchallenge on our campus. On Friday and Saturday, we welcomed hundreds of students from 26 teams from across the nation and the world, as well as hundreds more of their friends, families, supporters, and members of the public interested in seeing the cars! It was one of our team’s greatest honors to be given this opportunity and get to participate, even if we were not able to have a car leave for Texas Saturday morning, and we could not be more grateful to @umncse for all of their work to make this happen, our supporters and alumni for showing up to make this possible day of, and all of the teams for bringing their cars, people, and incredible energy to Northrop Mall. While we are not racing in ASC this year, we wish every team the best in their continued journey to Amarillo and especially wish our friends from overseas a safe journey home. Every team and our vehicles inspire each other and all those hoping for a more sustainable future, and we are incredibly thankful to have been the launching point for your journeys this year. ☀️🚗 #umn #americansolarchallenge2026 #umnproud PC: Alex U., Zhihan Z., NZ G.

With a heavy heart, and hours of deliberation, we have pulled out of the 2026 Formula Sun Grand Prix and the American Solar Challenge. For months on end, we’ve overcome numerous difficulties, stemming from materials, to funding, to planning every last detail. We’ve learned so much through this build cycle. Here’s a recap of what the last week has been Swipe to relive our days → 1/7 PC: Alex U. 7/17 - Scrutineering officially started, however we were set to start on 7/18. This day focused on perfecting every aspect of H1. → 2/7 PC: Aish B. 7/18 - Scrutineering started for us! We received 3 reds, two yellows, and two greens on this day. It helped us create a checklist of what needed to be finished. → 3/7 PC: Aish B. 7/19 - This day was spent fully debugging and making more and more progress to getting the car to actually move. → 4/7 PC: Aish B. 7/20 - Siemens challenge started! We had two members, Ivy and Luke, hard at work for the next few days. Meanwhile, other members continued their efforts on the car. Thanks to the dynamic duo, we ended up winning 3rd place! 7/21 - Mechanical status changed to blue! We continued to gather our blues and greens, but ran into major issues with our BMS system. → 5/7 PC: NZ G. 7/22 - Our biggest day yet. Long days, and even longer nights were spent on Hyperion. Wednesday morning, she was powered by her own motors. We collected the greens on BPS and Electrical with flying colors and moved onto dynamics. This was the last day of scrutineering, and we made it count. We ultimately passed all of our tests – we were blue! → 6/7 PC: Alex U. However, later that night, we found issues with our steering rack and braking system, and ultimately decided to withdraw from the event. This decision was made with the safety of our drivers and passengers in mind. We truly thank each and every one of our members for their sacrifices to this project. From late nights in the shop to long days machining, every effort has been put into this car. Thank you to everyone for all of your unwavering support. We will see you, stronger than ever, at our next rayce! ☀️UFF DA!! ☀️ 7/7 PC: @stanfordsolarcar #umnproud #umncse #americansolarchallenge2

Students from aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering presented their Senior Design projects! ⚙️ These projects provide hands-on experience where they work with local companies to develop innovative ideas. Congratulations to all of the winners! Two individuals are interacting with a transparent mechanical contraption filled with wires and components. They are at a booth with technical posters behind them, possibly at a science or engineering event. Multiple people are visible in the background.

CSE senior Jocelyn Prewett grew up in neighboring Minnesota states and knew early on that she wanted to work through complex problems step by step, which led her to aerospace engineering. “I had a really great high school physics teacher who made math feel useful and interesting by showing us how it applies to real problems,” said Prewett. Read her story at the link in our bio! A person stands on steps in front of a building with large columns, wearing a University of Minnesota shirt.

What an awesome moment, being in a room filled with aerospace engineer students and professors watching the Artemis 2 take-off. A lot more emotion than I was expecting from engineers 😅 #artemis #nasa #minnesota #scientists #engineers
