Major progress for the Small Satellite Research Laboratory (SSRL)! 🛰🌟

Following a successful pre-ship review with the University Nanosat Program, the SSRL team traveled to the Air Force Research Lab at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico to conduct flight model testing on EXACT. The goal of EXACT is to test a novel positioning, navigation and timing sensor that uses X-ray pulsars as navigation beacons in deep space.

The testing done was to ensure that EXACT could withstand both the extreme low forces of launch and the harsh environment of space.

The team will complete the final round of testing in October before the payload is delivered to the Space Test Program at NASA Johnson Space Center for integration testing. Currently, the launch target is a 2027–2028 deployment to the International Space Station!

Congratulations to the entire team on moving one step closer to space 🌌 by @umn_aem

The Summer Research Mentorship Program (SRMP) concluded last week with their second-ever Research Showcase! Students presented research that they have spent the summer working on with their faculty advisors and graduate student mentors. Each student was judged based on the quality of their initial short outlines and one-on-one presentations to the judges.

Congratulations to the top three presentations of the day:

🥇Cody Kufrin - Micro Particle Impact Loading on Copper Tantalum
🥈Samvel Kerobyan - Cable-Driven Parallel Robots in Space Simulations
🥉Sagar Sant - Cable-Driven Parallel Robot Design by @umn_aem

The Aerospace, Robotics, Dynamics, and Control (ARDC) Lab recently conducted a test with a 12-meter long deployable solar sail boom in Akerman Hall ☀

Results from this test will help validate the ARDC Lab's Cable-Actuated Bio-inspired Lightweight Elastic Solar Sail (CABLESSail) technology that could enable precise steering of solar sails that perform deep space exploration without relying on fuel! by @umn_aem

PhD student Amir Enayati Kafshgarkolaei recently placed first in heavyweight sparring at the AAU Taekwondo National Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida 🥋🥇

Originally from Iran, Amir was introduced to taekwondo at a young age by his father and brother, who are both taekwondo coaches. When he is not training, Amir conducts research focused on control systems and their applications in aerospace engineering, including spacecraft state estimation and the design and control of hypersonic vehicles.

After completing his PhD, Amir hopes to continue working in control systems, with a focus on advanced aerospace applications and real-world autonomous systems. by @umn_aem
