POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Twenty-seven years later, the Barbara Barker Center for Dance continues to be a striking presence on the University of Minnesota (@umntwincities) campus.

The facility was designed exclusively for dance education, rehearsal, performance, and creative inquiry.

Our design process began by asking dancers, “What is the essence of your art?”

Their answers—flow, balance, extension, release, and reach—inspired the building’s sculptural form.

That expressive energy remains just as lively today, as the Barbara Barker Center for Dance receives the 25-Year Award from AIA Minnesota (@aiaminnesota).

This recognition acknowledges the Center’s excellence in architectural design and significance—both in its original context and contemporary standards.

The University of Minnesota’s Barbara Barker Center for Dance in Minneapolis, designed by @hgaarchitects, is the 2026 recipient of the 25 Year Award. Congratulations to the team at HGA and their project partners on this achievement!

Completed in 1999, the building provided the @umntwincities’s nationally acclaimed dance program with its first dedicated home—a facility designed exclusively for dance education, rehearsal, performance, and creative inquiry. The design emerged through close collaboration between the design team and dancers. Rather than beginning with preconceived architectural forms, the process began by listening to the language of dance itself. Faculty described movement through ideas such as flow, balance, extension, release, and reach, inspiring an architecture that embodies the discipline, rhythm, and expressive energy of dance.

Over the past 27 years, the Barbara Barker Center has fulfilled and expanded its original vision. Together with the Rarig Center, Ted Mann Concert Hall, and the subsequently completed Regis Center for Art, it helps form a thriving arts district where dance, theater, music, and visual arts intersect. Today, the university describes the Barker Center as the “nucleus for dance on campus and the hub for movement research and discovery in the Twin Cities dance community.”

The HGA project team for the Barbara Barker Center for Dance included Joan Soranno, FAIA; John Cook, FAIA; Dan Avchen, FAIA; and Nancy Blankfard, FAIA. @kraus.anderson was the design-build contractor for the project.

Established in 1981, the annual 25 Year Award celebrates a 25- to 50-year-old building or group of buildings whose architecture has stood the test of time and continues to demonstrate excellence in architectural design and significance—both in its original context and by today’s standards.

We had a special guest show up at our bodystorm yesterday! Thanks for stopping by, Goldy!

Are you curious what’s happening in this bodystorm? Here are the rules at play:

🧫All cancer cells start in the middle of the room and are trying to metastasize by making it to a pillar (representing a new part of the body) before Goldy tags them
🧪All cancer cells must walk at a slow pace
🔬 Goldy is a T-cell racing to kill the cancer cells before the cancer spreads
🧬 Goldy can walk fast, but not run

And in this model Goldy won! 🏅 Congrats Goldy on stopping the cancer from spreading!!!

This is just one example of what we will be doing on a large scale this Sunday at The Battle. Curious to come see the research in action? Link in our bio to RSVP!

Event runs from 1:00 - 4:30 at Huntington Bank Stadium. All participants get a free t-shirt and a provided dinner from @afrodeli

It’s the One Fan Show Fall Theater Guide! Well, no, if I really compiled that it would be dozens of shows. Instead, after perusing the fall arts guides of our leading local publications and being pretty disappointed — even though these used to be roundups and features I devoured! — I decided to highlight the five plays and musicals *I* am most looking forward to this fall. None of which are featured in the Strib, Mpls.St.Paul, or Pioneer Press…?? Go figure.

Get out there and support @trademarktheater, @lyricartsanoka, @themodernrep, @theatreelision, and @umtad. And all local theaters!
