👏Congratulations to our UMTAD Alumni featured in both of these amazing productions! Through both “A Fine Balance” and “INDECENT”, our alumni thrive, reflecting their education and experiences from the many programs offered through UMTAD!

“A Fine Balance” tells the story of four unlikely companions thrown together in a cramped Bombay apartment turned illegal garment factory. As the political crisis deepens and the country reels under an authoritarian crackdown, this fragile household becomes a refuge, and an unexpected bond begins to take hold. As devastating as it is humane, “A Fine Balance”, adapted by Anosh Irani – Governor General’s Literary Award finalist and recipient of the Writers’ Trust Engel Findley Award vividly brings Mistry's powerful story to the stage. The show has been running since August 25th, with performances through November 7th at the Guloien Theatre, featuring UMTAD Alumnus Sugrith Varughese.

“INDECENT” is a haunting, klezmer-infused play with music that traces the turbulent journey of a troupe determined to stage a work deemed indecent. As their story unfolds across continents and decades, so too does a powerful meditation on censorship, nationalism and the policing of queer love. At once tender and thunderously relevant, this breathtaking theatrical experience shines a light on the enduring struggle between artistic expression and societal control. In a moment when questions of whose stories are “acceptable” feel increasingly urgent, “INDECENT” invites us to bear witness to the courage of artists, the cost of silence and the unshakable power of theater itself. “INDECENT” has performances running until October 25th at Theater Latté Da, featuring works from UMTAD Alumni & Faculty, Sarah Bahr, Wesley A. Cone, Jacey Stewert, Ani Tonoyan, and Caroline Amaral Zultron.

For more information on both of these productions, head to the link in our bio.

Tickets are on sale now for Ride The Cyclone the Musical, performances from November 6th to the 15th located in the Rarig Center!

Presented by the BA Performance Program and the School of Music, Book, Music and Lyrics by 🎭 Brooke Maxwell and Jacob Richmond, alongside Director 🎬 Alli St. John, 🎵 Music Director Samantha Laumann, and Choreographer 🕺 Cleo DeOrio bring this hauntingly spectacular performance to life.

After a roller coaster accident claims the lives of six members of a Canadian high school chamber choir, they find themselves suspended between life and death. Karnak, a mysterious fortune-telling machine, offers them one final possibility: one of them may return to life. Surreal, irreverent, and unexpectedly moving, Ride the Cyclone unfolds through the stories each teenager tells of the life they lived—and the life they never had the chance to live. Part ghost story, part musical fever dream, Ride the Cyclone is ultimately a meditation on memory, possibility, and what makes a life matter.

This is a must-see! Head to the link in our bio for more information & Ticket registration.

In early December 2024, TyLie Shider's "Whittier: A Play in Portraits" was performed in the UMN's Rarig Center.

Now you can catch a performance of this powerful play @WalkerArtCenter this Thursday (9/24) as part of their Free Thursday Nights.

"Whittier" is a contemporary docudrama following a diverse community of neighbors quarantined in Whittier, MN days after the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. The play is inspired by the graffiti, lawn signs, and murals created in protest of Floyd’s murder. It is adapted from focus groups, interviews, and talks Shider conducted with neighbors, small business owners, and community leaders of faith during the 2020 uprisings in his neighborhood.

Watch the full video to learn more about this play, and view it in person at the Walker Art Center this Thursday night! The presentation includes a brief screening of the documentary "Sign O’ the Times", which was adapted into the script, produced by local community nonprofit Dark Muse Healing Arts. A talkback with the performers and producers of the show follows the program.
