2.14.26 — A day in the life of Alabama’s most magical waterfall wonders.

Embedded in a magnificent canyon of 200-foot limestone cliffs known as “Walls of Jericho” lies a stunning and mysterious waterfall. It tumbles into a deep fishbowl pool, where its aqua green waters swirl away into a cave headed for territory unknown.

A few hundred feet below the spectacular 35-foot waterfall, Turkey Creek suddenly emerges from the mountainside. It cascades down a lower falls into a deep blue pool, whose striking colors put the tropical waters of Caribbean islands to shame. I say the Walls of Jericho is one of the most special waterfall hikes in the Southern U.S.

The Falls of Jericho can be accessed via a 3.5 mile hike one way, with a technical rock scramble necessary to see the biggest waterfall. What comes down must come back up, as the return trip features a 1,000-foot climb back to the parking area.

2025 was a fruitful year for new waterfalls. I revisited Georgia favorites in snowy conditions and with brilliant fall colors. I started researching my next book about waterfalls in the Chattanooga area. And I rediscovered many undocumented waterfalls in Tennessee and Alabama that few others had laid eyes on. Can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store!

Did you know Alabama’s Little River Canyon contains over a dozen stunning waterfalls? Now you do. These gems lie off-trail and are unknown to the general public, hidden away on numerous tributaries tumbling steeply into the canyon. And it’s a very brief drive across the border for my Georgia peeps!
